Air India has reintroduced its first retrofitted narrowbody aircraft, VT-EXN (A320neo), into service, marking a key milestone in its transformation journey. The aircraft now features new seats, carpets, curtains, enhanced cabin ambiance, a three-class configuration, and a fresh livery.
Part of a $400 million fleet upgrade
The retrofit of VT-EXN is part of the Tata Group’s $400 million fleet modernization initiative to upgrade Air India’s legacy narrowbody and widebody fleet. After undergoing retrofitting last year, VT-EXN now re-enters service alongside 14 newly inducted A320neo aircraft.
These aircraft, including the remaining 26 retrofitted A320neos, will operate on domestic and short-haul international routes, ensuring a seamless and upgraded travel experience.
Enhancing passenger comfort with premium features
As part of the ongoing retrofit program, Air India will upgrade all 27 A320neo aircraft by the third quarter of 2025. This includes the installation of:
- Over 3,500 brand-new Economy Class seats
- More than 600 Premium Economy seats
- 200 Business Class seats
The refurbishment has utilized 450 meters of premium leather, 15,000 meters of high-quality fabric, and 4,000 meters of plush carpeting.
A superior in-flight experience
Each retrofitted A320neo features:
- Eight luxurious Business Class seats
- 24 extra legroom seats in Premium Economy
- 132 comfortable Economy Class seats
The redesigned interiors offer a soothing ambiance, spacious legroom, and wider seat pitch. Modern amenities include portable electronic device (PED) holders, USB ports, new carpets, curtains, upholstery, and refreshed cabin panels featuring brand-aligned design motifs.
A broader transformation ahead
The retrofit program extends beyond narrowbody aircraft, with 40 widebody Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 aircraft also scheduled for upgrades. The first B787 is set to undergo its transformation next month, further enhancing Air India’s commitment to providing a world-class flying experience.
