Running a resort is no easy feat. A General Manager must have the necessary knowledge and skills to ensure that the hotel is operating efficiently and effectively. In my 15-year-long career, there have been several instances where I have been at a crossroad or have been doubtful about a decision that I have at hand but these learnings have helped me hold my ground and create impact not only for myself but also for the people around me.

1. Knowledge is Power

Knowledge is the foundation of working in any field. It is imperative to understand and acquire the necessary information that one would need while understanding how the industry functions. When you’re running a hotel or resort, you need to be able to take informed decisions, and be solution-oriented to achieve the desired results. Knowledge-building happens not only through textbooks; it can happen in various forms and can be built with experiences.

2. Attitude is Altitude

The second important aspect is to have the right attitude and mindset to be able to work in this industry. A positive attitude can help you overcome the various challenges and setbacks that will be thrown your way. How you choose to react to them with the right attitude will set the tone of your entire trajectory.

3. Skill is King

This goes without saying and comes with years of experience but having the right set of skills is important to run a hotel. Developing skills requires constant feedback, practicing what you already know and then challenging yourself. This will not only help you stand out but also help you accomplish more and achieve success.

4. Change is Constant

When you’ve worked in the industry for a significant period of time, it becomes a little challenging for you to think of out of the box and get out of your habits. The key is to constantly keep evolving and learning. In the world that we live in right now, we see things changing at a very rapid rate and the only thing constant is change. Getting out of your habit and continuously reinventing the wheel is how you will be able to stay afloat.

5. Passion is Success

The final learning that I would like to impart is that whatever one does in life, it needs to be with passion. This not only stands true in the hospitality industry but also in our day-to-day life. Passion is that one element in your life that will constantly fuel your hunger and help you reach places that you’ve envisioned for yourself and for your property.

These five learnings are my way of looking at what helps me stay motivated and achieve all my goals and the vision that I have set for my team and the property.
