Gurnoor Bindra, the newly appointed General Manager of The St. Regis Goa Resort, shares with Hotelier India her vision for one of India’s most iconic luxury destinations.

With over 14 years of international hospitality experience and accolades like ‘Middle East General Manager of the Year’, Gurnoor shares insights from her journey and how she plans to elevate the guest experience in Goa.

You’re taking charge of The St. Regis Goa Resort at a transformational moment. What is your vision for this property, and how do you plan to place it on the global map of luxury destinations?

It is a defining moment to step into leadership at The St. Regis Goa Resort, just as the resort unveils its remarkable transformation. My vision is bold yet clear: To position The St. Regis Goa not only as India’s finest resort, but as one of the finest luxury resorts in the world. The exquisite resort spans across 49 acres and has long been recognized for its natural beauty, but with the elevated St. Regis hallmarks, an entirely new narrative is possible, one that places this resort in the same league as the most iconic destinations in the world.

The renovations are now nearing completion, and we are on the cusp of unveiling a new suites’ wing that is truly first-of-its-kind in India, featuring our St. Regis Suites, Caroline Astor Suite & John Jacob Astor Villas and an extraordinary Presidential Villa. My vision is to showcase this transformation through marquee events and experiences that embody storytelling at its finest: from celebratory rituals unique to the St. Regis legacy, to signature festivals that bring together culture, fashion, art, and gastronomy.

With the legacy that the resort enjoys and the expanse that stretches from the River Sal to the Arabian Sea, with acres of verdant beauty between, the St. Regis Goa Resort holds all that it needs to be – a destination in itself. We aim to further curate itineraries for travellers from across the globe to enjoy every moment they spend in the resort. We are reimagining culinary journeys for each outlet with individual identities, signature IPs and much more. Whether a guest wishes to indulge or to detox, we wish to create unforgettable events that capture global attention. For me, the goal is not just revenues, it is to craft a cultural footprint so strong that when the world thinks of Goa, The St. Regis Goa Resort becomes the first name that comes to mind.

Having managed one of the largest Sheraton hotels in the Middle East, how will you bring that experience into shaping the St. Regis brand in Goa?

Leading the Sheraton Mall of the Emirates in Dubai, a 481-room flagship and the largest Sheraton in the Middle East, taught me to master both the science and the art of hospitality at scale. We launched innovative dining concepts, redefined guest engagement in a hyper-competitive market, and hosted events that were the talk of the city. That experience sharpened my ability to think both strategically and creatively.

Here at The St. Regis Goa Resort, the canvas is different, but the ambition is even greater. Goa demands experiences that are intimate, personal, and deeply connected to place. I want to translate the rigor and operational excellence of Dubai into an atmosphere where every guest feels like they are at the center of a personal story. This means introducing marquee gatherings that are designed not just to fill a calendar, but to leave a lasting imprint of St. Regis Goa in the minds of guests and tastemakers worldwide.

Storytelling will be central. Every event, every suite, every ritual should whisper the story of Goa and sing the spirit of St. Regis. The combination of scale, discipline, and imaginative curation is what I bring from Dubai into Goa.

What inspired you to switch from finance to hospitality, and how has your background in finance shaped your leadership style as a GM?

My early career in finance gave me an excellent foundation in structure, discipline, and analytics. But I realized very quickly that my heart was drawn toward people, experiences, and the dynamism of hospitality. I wanted to work in an industry where every day was about human connection, creativity, and impact.

That background in finance continues to shape me today. It has given me a leadership style that balances vision with discipline. I bring analytical rigor to decision-making, ensuring that our strategies are sustainable and that we are always mindful of efficiency. At the same time, I allow space for creativity, empathy, and imagination—the qualities that make hospitality truly magical. It’s this combination that allows me to push boundaries while ensuring we remain resilient and future-ready.

You’re among the growing number of women leaders in luxury hospitality. What has your journey been like breaking through glass ceilings in a global, male-dominated industry?

It has been a journey of persistence, resilience, and passion. There were challenges, of course, but they strengthened me and helped me grow into a leader who is both empathetic and decisive. Personally, I had not planned to embark upon this journey, due to perception of long working hours and lack of work-life balance, for the General Manager of a hotel. However, I was determined to breakthrough and establish myself to prove the stereotypes wrong; and successfully ‘have-it-all’, with my mother, husband, brother and son being constant sources of motivation and support.

Winning awards and recognition was gratifying not just for me, but for what it signals, that women leaders can thrive and excel in this industry at the very highest levels. Today, I see myself not just as a GM, but as part of a wider movement for representation and inclusivity in hospitality. The legacy I want to leave behind is not just of successful properties, but of pathways cleared for those who come after me.

What advice would you give young women aspiring to leadership roles in hospitality?

First, believe in your worth, confidence is the foundation of leadership. Second, be resilient; this industry tests you daily, and setbacks should be stepping stones, not stumbling blocks. Third, never stop learning. Hospitality is evolving rapidly, and leaders must stay curious and adaptable.

I also believe in the power of mentorship. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to guide and mentor young women, many of whom are now making their mark in leadership. I want to continue that journey, because the next generation of women leaders deserve encouragement, visibility, and advocacy. My advice is simple: dream big, stay authentic, and remember that leadership is not about imitation, it’s about bringing your unique self to the table.
