In a decisive move to strengthen Sikkim’s premium hospitality infrastructure and position Gangtok as a high-value tourism, wedding, and MICE destination, Prem Singh Tamang, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, laid the foundation stone for Hyatt Regency Gangtok, a 150-room five-star hotel in the capital city.
The ceremony was held at Chintan Bhawan in Gangtok. In a decisive move to deepen Sikkim’s premium hospitality infrastructure and position Gangtok as a high-value tourism, wedding and MICE destination, Prem Singh Tamang, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, today laid the foundation stone for Hyatt Regency Gangtok, a landmark 150-room five-star hotel coming up in the heart of the capital city. The ceremony was held at Chintan Bhawan in Gangtok.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister stated, “This Foundation Stone is a symbol of trust, partnership, and the bright future we are building together in our beautiful Himalayan state, Sikkim.” He congratulated the SM Group and Poddar Group for their visionary initiative and for placing their confidence in the state.
The Chief Minister also extended his appreciation to the leadership of Hyatt Hotels Corporation for choosing Gangtok as a destination for their prestigious global brand.
Tourism as a pillar of Sikkim’s economy
Highlighting the importance of tourism, Tamang added that the sector remains a vital pillar of the state’s economy and supports thousands of families. He noted that the flow of visitors to Sikkim consistently exceeds more than double the state’s population, reflecting its growing appeal as a preferred travel destination.
He further expressed confidence that the upcoming Hyatt Regency would reflect the cultural spirit of Sikkim by showcasing local art, promoting regional cuisine, sourcing local produce, and supporting local talent.
Addressing the luxury hospitality gap
Gangtok recorded more than 17 lakh tourist arrivals in 2025, including over 71,000 international visitors. The state has witnessed steady year-on-year growth driven by improved connectivity and the reopening of major tourist circuits.
Currently, Sikkim has the capacity to host approximately 42,000–45,000 tourists per day. The addition of 150 luxury rooms in the city centre is expected to attract higher-spending domestic and international travellers, addressing the existing demand-supply gap in the premium hospitality segment.
The hotel will be developed within a larger 3.27-acre master-planned site, further strengthening the city’s luxury accommodation offerings.
Development partners and project vision
The project will be developed by Gyalshing Hotels Private Limited, an SPV under SM Hotels and Resorts Pvt Ltd, the hospitality arm of SM Developers.
Vikas Agarwal, Managing Director and CEO of SM Developers, said the development marks a significant milestone for Sikkim’s hospitality sector. Designed by SCSY Studio, Singapore, the hotel will offer experiential luxury, premium dining, and modern event infrastructure for leisure and business travellers in the Eastern Himalayas.
World-class hospitality and event infrastructure
The 150-room hotel will feature a 180-cover all-day dining restaurant with alfresco seating, a specialty restaurant, bar and lounge, Regency Club, temperature-controlled outdoor pool, 3,000 sq. ft. spa, gym, and family activity zones.
It will also offer around 13,000 sq. ft. of flexible meeting and event spaces, positioning it as a key hub for MICE tourism in the Eastern Himalayas. The development will additionally include a licensed casino facility, further strengthening Gangtok’s high-value tourism appeal.
Strengthening Sikkim’s tourism economy
With large-format event infrastructure, the hotel is set to host destination weddings, conventions, cultural showcases, corporate summits, and festivals, positioning Gangtok as a year-round events destination.
The project is also expected to generate employment, strengthen local supply chains, and support sectors such as transport, handicrafts, and cultural tourism, reinforcing Sikkim’s vision of sustainable tourism-led growth.
