Excerpts from the interview…
What triggered your interest in hospitality?
From a young age, I was drawn to people, culture, and the power of human connection. Hospitality offered the perfect canvas to blend these passions. It’s a profession where every day is different, where the smallest gesture can create a lasting memory for someone. That ability to impact someone’s experience so positively is what pulled me in—and keeps me inspired.
You have worked with some of the most prestigious hospitality brands in India. What led you to take on the role at JW Marriott Kolkata?
JW Marriott Kolkata presented an opportunity to lead a flagship property in one of the most culturally vibrant cities of India. The brand’s global legacy, combined with the warmth and complexity of Kolkata, was a unique challenge I was excited to embrace. I saw it as a platform to not only drive business but also shape an enduring guest experience that reflects both global standards and local authenticity.

Looking back at your two-decade-long journey in hospitality, what core leadership values have remained constant for you?
Integrity, empathy, and consistency. No matter how the industry evolves, these values are timeless. I believe in leading by example, being present for my team, and making decisions that are both ethical and people-centric. Hospitality is a business of hearts, and you can’t succeed without staying grounded in human values.
You have implemented several strategic initiatives since taking over at JW Marriott Kolkata. What were the key priorities when you first joined?
My first focus was on culture and people—building a team that believed in excellence and collaboration. From there, we emphasised guest personalisation, service innovation, and F&B excellence, ensuring that every guest touchpoint felt elevated. We also invested in digital engagement and community connect, knowing how critical brand perception and local relevance are in today’s landscape.
Under your leadership, the hotel has become No.1 on TripAdvisor. What goes into building a guest experience that consistently earns such high ratings?
It starts with listening. Every guest has a need, or an expectation. Training the team to anticipate and adapt to those expectations is key. We’ve built a culture of genuine care, not just service delivery. Recognition programmes, real-time feedback mechanisms, and empowering associates to act on guest needs immediately have helped us maintain a high standard of experience.

How do you inspire your team to maintain consistent service excellence, especially in a fast-paced, high-demand luxury setting?
By creating ownership at every level. When team members feel seen, valued, and trusted, they naturally go the extra mile. We celebrate successes, learn from setbacks, and keep communication open. I also spend a lot of time on the floor—not behind a desk—because leadership is most effective when it’s visible and accessible.
How do you personally balance the intense demands of running a luxury hotel with time for your family?
It’s a challenge, but one I approach with intention. I prioritise quality over quantity—when I’m with my family, I’m fully present. I also make time for routines that ground me—whether it’s early morning reflections, weekend dinners, or simply unplugging for a few hours. The key is to be mindful and protect that time as much as any professional commitment.
How do you view the evolution of luxury hospitality in India over the next five years?
Luxury in India is becoming more experiential and personalised. It’s no longer just about opulence—it’s about meaningful moments, local immersion, and sustainability. Tech will play a bigger role in streamlining service, but the emotional quotient—empathy, storytelling, cultural context—will define true luxury. Brands that can blend both will lead the way.
What are some challenges luxury hotels in metro cities like Kolkata face that are different from leisure destinations?
In metros like Kolkata, we operate in a hyper-competitive, year-round business environment, serving a diverse mix of corporate, social, and transient travellers. Unlike leisure destinations, where demand may be seasonal but predictable, city hotels must constantly adapt to shifting trends, local dynamics, and high guest expectations—all while managing space, staffing, and infrastructure constraints.
What advice would you give to young hoteliers aspiring to lead in the luxury segment?
Stay hungry, stay humble and always take risks. Learn every role, understand every guest, and lead with your heart. Luxury is not about being perfect—it’s about making people feel seen and valued. Embrace feedback, invest in continuous learning, and never lose the passion that brought you into this industry. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.
