In an era of increasing ecological awareness, The Machan Lonavala sets a benchmark in sustainable tourism by maintaining carbon neutrality across its entire group, including the head offices in Mumbai and The Legacy Mandawa in Rajasthan. Proving that sustainability and exquisite amenities can coexist, The Machan reinforces its status as India’s leading carbon-neutral resort since 2021.
Sanat Hooja, Partner at The Machan, emphasizes the brand’s enduring commitment: “Achieving sustainability is a perpetual commitment. Given the dire consequences of climate change, the tourism sector’s role in global sustainability has never been more critical. Our ongoing commitment since 2021 underlines our dedication and leadership in the eco-tourism space, setting new standards for the industry.”
In its pursuit of environmental excellence, The Machan has significantly amplified its sustainability initiatives. Last year marked the augmentation of The Machan’s solar energy capacity by eightfold, implementing a robust 100kw solar system. The same is expected to be increased by another 60kW in 2024, reducing the reliance on fossil fuel-powered electricity.
The Machan’s commitment to the environment extends to increasing tree cover, with the vibrant vegetation now increased from 12,000 to 13,410 this year. This 10% growth has been achieved through rootstock regeneration of indigenous trees that sequester vast amounts of CO2 from the environment.
This year, Machan’s total emissions amounted to 750 tCO2e. In response, it purchased 950 carbon credits from the UN CDM platform, not only offsetting its emissions but also providing an additional positive impact of 200 tCO2e. This commitment underscores The Machan’s dedication to exceeding sustainability expectations. Further, the group meticulously selects high-quality carbon credits, focusing on additionality, permanence, leakage, and SDG impact, to ensure meaningful environmental contributions.
Gautam Shiknis, Founder of NettZero Environmental Advisory Technologies Pvt. Ltd, praised The Machan’s continued efforts: “The Machan exemplifies the integration of sustainable practices into the hospitality industry, proving that environmental responsibility and business success can go hand in hand. Their ongoing achievements in carbon neutrality set a benchmark for others to follow.”
The Machan’s holistic approach to sustainability includes not just renewable energy adoption and reforestation but also water conservation efforts, contributing to local biodiversity, and offering guests a truly immersive natural experience without compromising on luxury.
