“My journey in the hospitality industry over the past three decades has been shaped by the challenges I embraced and my passion for excellence through innovation. Two key principles that have guided me are leading with empathy and serving with purpose,” affirms Souvagya Mohapatra, Managing Director (India, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka operations), Atmosphere Hotels & Resorts.
People First
With an exceptional record in luxury hotel development, guest relations, revenue growth, brand building, and property launches, Mohapatra shares, “In hospitality, we always put people first. Whether it is about guiding a team or addressing a challenging guest situation, empathy allows us to see things from others’ perspectives, ease tension, and forge authentic connections. During difficult times, leading with empathy fosters trust and loyalty among our teams and with guests.”
Purposeful Leadership
Starting his career with the Oberoi Group, Mohapatra spent most of his professional journey with MAYFAIR Hotels & Resorts, rising from Hotel Manager to Executive Director. He witnessed the group’s expansion from two hotels to 12 world-class properties. “When leadership is driven by purpose, every action becomes part of a greater mission — whether enhancing guest satisfaction, uplifting team morale, strengthening brand reputation, or making a positive community impact,” he maintains.
Such attributes, he adds, become critical during adversity, be it staffing shortages, economic challenges, or periods of peak stress. “They remind me to remain human, keep my focus sharp, and set the right example for those around me.”
Innovation & Beyond
He views the future of Indian hospitality as “innovation and cultural heritage meeting personalisation.” As he explains, “We see Indian hospitality blending its rich traditions and warmth with cutting-edge technology, sustainability, and highly tailored guest experiences.”
A member of several reputed industry bodies, Mohapatra sees his legacy not only in properties built or milestones achieved but in the knowledge and decision-making skills he now seeks to share with the next generation of hospitality leaders.
