With nearly three decades in hospitality and over two decades at Hyatt, Sunjae Sharma has witnessed—and shaped—the evolution of the industry in India. Having held leadership roles across Hyatt’s flagship properties, from Grand Hyatt Mumbai to Hyatt Regency Chennai and Kolkata, he now spearheads the company’s operational and growth strategy across India and Southwest Asia.
Empathetic Guidance
“For me, leadership is about empowering others to grow, innovate and lead with empathy,” he says. “I want to leave a legacy that emphasises the power of genuine care and creating meaningful experiences—not just for guests, but also for colleagues and communities.”
Under his stewardship, properties like Grand Hyatt Mumbai set new international benchmarks as multidimensional lifestyle destinations. His journey has seen him move from food & beverage and operations roles to overseeing 16 hotels as Area Vice President, before stepping into his current role as Managing Director.
Soulful Innovation
Looking ahead, he envisions Indian hospitality as “heartfelt hospitality meets innovation with agility.” As he explains: “We’re blending tradition with technology, luxury with sustainability, and service with soul. The future traveller seeks more than just a stay—they want experiences that feel personal, purposeful and reflective of India’s rich culture and evolving spirit.”
Leadership Explained
Guided by his mantra—“Be present, be agile and put people first”—he believes that humility, trust and collaboration remain the true cornerstones of leadership. “Leadership isn’t about having all the answers, but about showing up, inspiring trust and navigating change together,” he reflects.
