Wyndham Hotels & Resorts signed an exclusive development agreement with Soliteight Hotel Projects SA to introduce its Super 8® by Wyndham brand to Spain and Portugal. Soliteight, a hotel development and investment firm and existing Wyndham franchisee, will develop and open 40 Super 8 hotels over the next ten years, filling a crucial gap in the region’s hospitality landscape.
Super 8 will cater to the rising number of budget-conscious travellers in Spain and Portugal. The initiative responds to record-breaking tourism growth in both countries and increased demand for reliable, high-quality, budget accommodations. Wyndham currently operates 14 Super 8 hotels across EMEA, including in Germany, the UK, and Saudi Arabia.
First opening set for Portugal in 2027
The first Super 8 hotel in the region is slated to open in Leiria, Portugal in Q4 2027. Additional properties will be developed in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities across Spain and Portugal, particularly in high-traffic locations such as airports, major retail zones, and along key transit routes. Many of these properties will be new builds featuring smart modular construction, prioritising sustainability and efficiency, in line with Super 8’s brand ethos.
“Bringing Super 8 to Spain and Portugal is a strategic move to make quality, affordable travel more accessible. Southern Europe has a growing demand for reliable, budget-friendly accommodations and our collaboration with Soliteight allows us to meet that need. By introducing a trusted brand in key destinations, we ensure travellers can enjoy great value without sacrificing quality,” said Dimitris Manikis, President, EMEA, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.
Addressing market demand with budget-friendly comfort
The launch of Super 8 by Wyndham in Iberia is fuelled by booming tourism and shifting traveller expectations. In 2024, Spain welcomed a record 94 million international visitors, while Portugal experienced similar growth. A 3.2% rise in Spain’s GDP that same year also boosted domestic and business travel, especially in smaller cities. As travellers look for alternatives to either basic budget stays or costly mid-range options, Super 8 offers a middle path—combining reliability, quality, and affordability.
“Spain and Portugal continue to lag other European markets in branded economy hotels, with a 10% gap in budget brand penetration, despite a 142% surge in RevPAR since 2019. We are delighted to partner with Wyndham as the exclusive developer for Super 8 in Iberia, addressing the need for well-branded economy hotels that offer comfort, consistency, and value,” said Rui Alpalhão, Chief Executive, Soliteight.
