Tell us about yourself… What triggered the idea of launching The Health Factory? How did it all start?
The idea for The Health Factory came from a very personal place. As a working professional, bread was always part of my breakfast because it was quick and easy. But my mother would often remind me that it wasn’t the healthiest option, and that really stuck with me. I started to wonder—could something as basic as bread be made healthier? That question drove me to dig deeper. I spent months researching how other countries were making healthier foods and what changes we could bring here. But the journey wasn’t easy—there were no clear answers, and it was hard to find the right people with the same vision.
After a lot of trial and error, I finally teamed up with a bakery expert. We didn’t just want to make another type of bread; we wanted to create something truly revolutionary. After countless tests and setbacks, we launched India’s first protein bread. It wasn’t an overnight success. We faced challenges in getting people to trust something new. However, with persistence, we gained momentum. Then, we did thorough market research to understand what people want today. We found that Indian consumers were looking for healthier, maida-free options. This led us to create Zero Maida Bread—a cleaner, healthier version of the usual brown or wholewheat bread, but with the same taste that people already loved. It wasn’t easy—it took years of hard work, lots of testing, and overcoming many challenges. In the end, we believe in and stand for offering healthier alternatives to the most common things we eat in our day-to-day lives.
What is the USP of your brand?
Our brand’s USP is our dedication to making healthier, clean-label bread and bakery products. All our breads are 100% wholewheat with zero maida, no added preservatives, and no artificial colors—providing a nutritious option without losing the great taste. We were also the first in India to introduce protein bread, catering to health-conscious consumers as well as those who want wholesome, everyday bread. Our mission is to change the way people think about bread by making daily staples healthier, while keeping the taste they love.
How did you raise funding for your venture?
In the beginning, we bootstrapped the business, using our own resources to get things off the ground. This helped us lay a solid foundation and gain early traction. Fundraising wasn’t easy, especially as a new founder launching a start-up. There’s a steep learning curve, and we went through multiple rounds of pitches and meetings with various VCs and angel investors. In 2022, we met Venture Garage, who understood the space and category in which we were building. It’s not just about getting money, but about finding the right partner who believes in your idea and wants to invest in it. With their support, we raised a pre-seed round to enhance our operations and manufacturing processes. This allowed us to strengthen our infrastructure, build a talented team, and expand our marketing efforts. Recently, we raised another round of $3.5 million to accelerate product development and explore new product categories. This funding will also fuel our expansion into both general and modern trade channels, growing our retail presence. Additionally, we plan to invest in logistics and technology to make our processes more efficient as we scale rapidly.
What challenges did you have to overcome at the beginning of your journey?
Cracking the product was one of our biggest challenges. We were trying to create something revolutionary—a bread that not only appealed to consumers but also had no maida, preservatives, or artificial colours. Achieving the perfect texture without these common additives took nearly three years of rigorous trials and experimentation to get the formulation just right.
Once we had the product ready, the next major hurdle was reaching our consumers. My co-founder, Mohit, and I personally went from store to store across Mumbai, pitching our bread. In those early days, we even made home deliveries ourselves every day, constantly talking to our customers and getting their feedback. Building our distribution channel was tough, especially in a market dominated by established players. But we stayed persistent, growing our presence one store and one street at a time.
Scaling up was difficult, but looking back now, it was all worth it. Those late-night grind sessions and early morning deliveries paid off. Today, we are present in more than 700 stores across 6+ cities, available on all major quick commerce platforms, and growing our presence every day.
Where do you see your brand in five years from now?
In five years, we aim to be present in over 250 cities and towns, expanding our reach across multiple pin codes. Our vision is to become India’s breadwala. Our mission is to provide India with a healthy, clean-label brand. To achieve this, we are expanding our retail presence in both general and modern trade outlets, making The Health Factory a household name. We want our breads to be easily accessible, especially in tier 1 and tier 2 towns, while also educating people about healthier alternatives for their daily diet.
