The biggest culture shock renowned Bengaluru-based YouTube content creator Ishan Sharma, experienced on his visit to the US, was with “American Hotels. They just don’t get hospitality.”
Apparently, after a tired flight journey, when he checked into his hotel – Ceasar’s Palace – and asked for water, he was shocked at the hotel’s response.
Sharma ranted his experience on his Twitter handle. “Funny how they ask for tips but won’t even give complementary water. I stayed at 3 star, 4 star AND today 5 star hotel (Caesar’s Palace) Maybe I’m spoilt with Taj hotels in India. But basic things like helping with luggage, being accommodating were missing. I check in at 2am tired from the flight and asked for a glass of water, they say “it’s $14.99 for a 200ml bottle you can buy it”. And this is a $200 per night hotel! Complete lack of empathy. Unbelievable! Never expected this.”
What followed was a host of comments on how US didn’t understand hospitality, and how Indians and Indian hotels would never resort to such responses.
23-year-old Sharma, incidentally is founder of MarkitUp and also the author of two books, and has over a million subscribers on YouTube.
Post his tweet expressing disappointment over the hotel’s hospitality, authorities of Caesar’s Palace reportedly replied to him saying: “We’re excited to have you at our resort! We appreciate you taking the time to reach out. Feel free to message us if anything else is needed.”
And guess what?! The hotel even gave him a free upgrade.
Thanking the hotel for the same, Sharma, in his next post, sitting in the luxurious hotel room, added, “Thank you Caesar’s Palace for the upgrade. I’m glad you heard me.”
