Is organic a buzzword?

Shriya Naheta Wadhwa, Health Coach and Founder of Zama Organics.

What exactly is organic produce? It’s grown without chemical pesticides and fertilisers, making it healthier and safer for consumption. Moreover, organic farming is likely to increase biodiversity, soil quality, and reduce energy consumption. However, organic farming itself is a task – more work, more weeds, and lower yield, which contributes to the higher price tag of organic produce.

When it comes to organic, the consumer is buying both the product and an assurance about that product.

More than ever before, consumers have become extremely health conscious, mindful about what they consume, and particular about the details of their food. It’s a positive trend for health, but it also means that businesses need to be honest and transparent about their practices to keep up with consumer demand!

Consumers are taking the lead in demanding transparency from brands that make and sell food – in order to meet the growing consciousness, businesses need to ensure the authenticity of their supply-chain, beyond cheap prices and basic paperwork.

True authenticity is more important than buzzwords

We all love discounts, but when it comes to organic produce, consumers must recognize the value based on authentic quality and not base their decisions purely on deep discounts and deals. We often fail to realize that if producers and suppliers feel they must lower their prices—it could mean sacrificing their product’s authenticity and quality to stay afloat and compete.

As a consumer, asking deeper questions and holding the company accountable matters because it helps you make informed decisions about what you eat and how they support the entire supply chain. It’s high-time for businesses to be responsible and it is especially true when selling something that has to do with health!

Consumers have started playing more of a role in driving transparency, but it is a shared responsibility for both consumers and businesses to be aware of their impact and create more awareness together.

At Zama, we remain committed to our vision – to spearhead a collaborative movement that promotes high quality products that are authentic, good for you, the environment, and create impact for the community at large.
