President of Royal Orchid Hotels Ltd., one of India’s leading hospitality chains, and the driving force behind ICONIQA Hotels & Resorts, the group’s new-age upscale lifestyle hotel brand, Arjun Baljee is a second-generation hotelier with over 20 years of diverse experience across hospitality, real estate, technology, start-ups, and public-sector advisory.

Known for his visionary leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, and ability to translate innovation into business results, he began his journey with Royal Orchid Hotels in 2001 as part of the project implementation team. As co-promoter, he played a foundational role in growing the brand from two to 10 hotels within six years, culminating in a successful IPO in 2006. Over the years, his strategic foresight and execution have been instrumental in building Royal Orchid into one of the most recognised hospitality brands in the country, with a growing global presence.

He has also advised multiple businesses—ranging from new-age ventures to legacy conglomerates—across geographies. Notably, he served as Strategic Advisor to the Tourism Development Fund (TDF) of Saudi Arabia, a sovereign fund responsible for tourism infrastructure investments in the Kingdom. ICONIQA Hotels & Resorts — India’s first upscale lifestyle hotel brand by Royal Orchid Hotels — marks his most personal and transformative project to date.

Facade

You have nearly two decades of cross-industry experience—from hospitality and real estate to start-ups and public-sector advisory. How have these diverse experiences influenced your approach to building hotels?

Each experience offers a unique lens through which we view the world, exposing you to different cultures, consumer behaviours, and perspectives. Over time, you begin to identify a common thread across demographics, despite global diversity. That thread becomes a blueprint for designing a hotel or creating a brand.

The goal is to craft a product for one clearly defined global target demographic. I’ve been extremely fortunate to have worked across such varied sectors, allowing me to better understand who the customer is for each brand we launch.

As a second-generation hotelier, how do you balance legacy with innovation?

I’ve been very fortunate to work on the foundation built by my father and his remarkable team. The challenge today lies in creating an agile organisation, one that retains its core values while constantly evolving through its brands to remain relevant over the next decade.

Innovation can feel like a “heavy” word. I prefer to think in terms of evolution, because today’s customer is not yesterday’s, and with the next generation exposed to global trends, our approach must naturally evolve to meet shifting expectations.

With evolution comes a cultural shift. There are those who embrace it, and those who are more comfortable with the way things used to be. Balancing legacy with progress is an art, honouring what has worked while thoughtfully challenging the status quo.

Reception

You’ve described ICONIQA Hotels & Resorts as India’s first upscale lifestyle hotel brand. What makes ICONIQA different from other lifestyle offerings in the market?

ICONIQA is the confluence of elevated interior design, thoughtfully curated facilities, intuitive service design, and cutting-edge technology.

The brand and the hotel were developed hand-in-hand, with a conscious decision to introduce a new category in a highly competitive market. We began by clearly defining our target guests and understanding how they use hotels for both work and leisure. As the boundaries between business and leisure continue to blur, guests now engage with hotels more casually and expect greater functionality.

We addressed key pain points; introducing smart in-room laundry closets, espresso machines, custom beds, and curated minibars. F&B offerings were reimagined: the lobby lounge was transformed into an exciting Asian bar, and we replaced the traditional all-day dining concept with a vibrant Pan-Indian restaurant. Mumbai’s first rooftop day club is also part of this concept.

Wellness was designed with intention including a nail bar, blow-dry bar, spa with functional wellness offerings, and an AI-powered gym with Pilates and yoga.

Every space was created by mapping the lifestyles of the upwardly mobile global traveller. The aesthetic is global yet approachable, whimsical yet relatable. We’ve built a fun, accessible hotel at the right price point.

How do you balance the needs of a diverse portfolio—from business hotels to resorts and now lifestyle-driven ICONIQA?

We’ve segmented our portfolio into five distinct lifestyle categories. Whether it’s a guest staying at a budget hotel or an upscale property, our aim is to ensure they feel at ease in an environment tailored to their expectations and price point.

Each brand has a clearly defined growth strategy complete with its own development, operations, and marketing plans.

Kadak

What role do global partnerships, design collaborations, and technology integrations play in Royal Orchid’s next chapter?

We are very open to global partnerships. For instance, we’ve engaged international design firms to reimagine Regenta Hotels, with the first of these redesigned properties opening in Lucknow.

In parallel, we’ve built our own tech stack, integrating global best-in-class technologies to create a scalable platform capable of operating hotels efficiently at scale.

India is witnessing a strong revival of domestic tourism and increasing inbound travel. What opportunities do you see for homegrown hospitality brands in this landscape?

Royal Orchid Hotels Ltd is deeply rooted in the Indian market, serving primarily Indian guests. We are currently present in 80+ cities and expanding rapidly across segments in each location.

India’s infrastructure growth has unlocked access to destinations that were previously off the travel map. As domestic travel continues to flourish, we’re aligning our expansion strategy to meet this rising demand both in volume and in evolving guest expectations.

Do you see ICONIQA expanding globally, or will its focus remain on urban India first?

ICONIQA is an upscale lifestyle brand with global potential. We’ve developed a clear understanding of the guest lifestyle it caters to, and Hotel 1 in Mumbai has been built with the intent to scale the brand methodically.

Our vision isn’t limited to India’s urban centres. We’re open to exploring international markets, and even resort destinations. There may well be some exciting ICONIQA resorts on the horizon.
