Keeping in line with climatic changes and scarcity of resources, various monsoon-focused initiatives are being undertaken at Hyatt’s Indian properties with the intention of using water judiciously to reduce the environmental impact of the hotels’ day-to-day operations. Several Hyatt properties in India have led the way by setting an example for other properties in the company’s portfolio with their monsoon-focused initiatives.
Hyatt Regency Mumbai identified that the water level in the existing bore well was decreasing. To address this issue and to contribute to the organisational commitment of sustainability, the hotel initiated rain water harvesting. During the monsoons, water collected on the terrace is routed through the storm water line to rain water bores. The initiative resulted in higher groundwater levels throughout the year and the hotel receives approximately 33,000 liters of water annually for its domestic use. This also helps the hotel save INR 26 lakh rupees annually.
Grand Hyatt Mumbai has a rain water collection system that helps generate an average 10,000 KL of water; post-filtration this is used for local applications. Its in-house sewage treatment plant helps recycle domestic waste water that is later utilised for gardening and the air conditioning plant. To conserve water, flow regulators have been installed in showers in all the guestrooms leading to minimum 20000 liters of water saving every day.
Park Hyatt Goa Resort & Spa has a closed swimming pool makeup water line to utilise rain water. Additionally, the rainwater that is collected or overflows in the hotel’s lagoons is used for groundwater recharging pits. Hyatt Regency Chandigarh makes use of recycled water for irrigation and cooling towers. To conserve water, it also makes use of flow restrictors in guest room and public area taps.
Kurt Straub, VP of operations for India, Hyatt Hotels and Resorts India commented, “Our initiative to conserve water is a part of our long-term strategic approach towards environmental sustainability. As a responsible corporate citizen, we believe that conserving natural resources is of utmost importance to adhere to responsible business practices.”
The sustainability practices at Hyatt are focused on improving energy and water conservation, waste reduction and recycling, sustainable purchasing, green communication and education for guests and associates, donations and volunteering time. By embedding environmentally sustainable practices across businesses, the company aims to use resources more thoughtfully, build more efficient and sustainable hotels, and inspire stakeholder action on environmental issues.
