Hospitality gets a green conscience

With hotels growing increasingly aware of the impact they have on the environment, there seems to be a shift towards more eco-conscious efforts on their part. The last month saw several activities carried out by leading hotels’ employees.
The Courtyard by Marriott, Gurgaon put up an exotic display of art solely dedicated to the theme “green” and also saw the active participation of more than two hundred elite Marriott clientele in a tree plantation drive. The Courtyard by Marriott, Pune Hinjewadi celebrated April as the Environmental Awareness Month.

The series of green activities commenced with a clean-up drive in and around the hotel periphery. Next was the inter-departmental collage competition where each department created a collage out of waste, recyclable materials and spread awareness about the ‘need of the hour, to preserve Mother Earth’. The collages were later displayed in the hotel lobby to create awareness amongst the guests as well.

A sapling plantation with the hotel’s associates was organised to ensure a cleaner greener future and strengthening a continuous commitment towards the local community and to add a splash of green to the hotel’s surroundings. Along with having various eco- themed quiz contests, the hotel team is urging their guests to be a part of the noble initiatives. Adding a unique spot to the hotel, many of the hotel’s patrons came together to create their own patch of green- the ‘Corporate Green Corner’. Saplings were gifted to guests for them to plant it in their homes or offices, hence greening their personal space as well.

The General Manager of Courtyard by Marriott Pune Hinjewadi, Ranju Alex said, “Courtyard by Marriott, Pune Hinjewadi has always fulfilled its tasks, being a responsible citizen towards the environment; this being one of our top priorities. We at the Hotel have always believed that when the system gives you something, you have to give something back. April was celebrated as Environmental Awareness Month to reinforce our motto of Responsible Citizenship.”
JW Marriott Mumbai also celebrated Environment Month in April, the endeavour this year was to conserve forests and was carried out in association with Hideout, an organic farm located in Thane, a north-eastern suburb of Mumbai, to help plant trees.

With the help of Hideout, the hotel extended their support to the Warli village and their local tribal art forms by supporting the cause of conserving their farms. About 25 of the hotel associates along with Guy Godet, General Manager, JW Marriott Mumbai spent the day with the local folk and joined hands together to help this drive become successful by planting more than 200 saplings of Glydisidia trees, which absorb nitrogen from the environment and support the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air. Here’s to more such efforts by the hotel industry!
