In the serene town of Campuestohan in Negros Occidental, Philippines, a unique building has grabbed the world’s attention — a gigantic chicken-shaped hotel.
Officially recognized by Guinness World Records, this landmark hotel is certified as the world’s largest building in the form of a chicken.
Measuring, 34.931 m (114 ft 7 in) in height, 12.127 m (39 ft 9 in) in width and 28.172 m (92 ft 5 in) in length, Campuestohan Highland Resort’s latest holiday spot is officially the largest building in the shape of a chicken.
It’s not a novelty item alone — it’s a fully operational hotel that provides an out-of-this-world visitor experience.
A Dream Realised in Concrete and Feathers
The mastermind of this daring concept is Ricardo Cano Gwapo Tan, who spearheaded the construction from design to delivery in a span of more than one year. The building broke ground on 10 June 2023 and was completed on 8 September 2024.
Here’s what Ricardo says, “I had a vision to create something with a wow factor that can really leave a footprint of admiration to the public.”
True to that dream, the structure has 15 hotel rooms in it, each of which is equipped with air conditioning, wide beds, flat-screen TVs, and hot showers.
This Chicken Hotel Built to Last — and Inspire
Creating a building shaped like a chicken was a huge challenge, particularly in an area that experiences typhoons and strong storms. The building, however, was designed to withstand it all, and was constructed with creativity and safety in mind.
The selection of a rooster was not an accident. Ricardo discusses that Negros Occidental’s gamefowl industry provides employment for millions in the Philippines. “If you look at a rooster,” he adds, “it looks peaceful and authoritative, dominant and powerful which is like the attitude of our people.”
He continues that the rooster represents the courage of Negrense people, who have the ability to bounce back from crises and challenges — an indication of local character and resilience.
From Dream to Destination
The property where the hotel sits was initially bought in 2010 by Ricardo’s wife, Nita. Although it had limited infrastructure then, the couple was awed by the stunning mountain scenery and started working on what is now a full-service resort.
Campuestohan Highland Resort boasts a multitude of attractions — from wave pools and cafes to dinosaur sculptures. But it’s the giant chicken hotel that now gets the most attention and visitors.
