India’s apprenticeship ecosystem is witnessing a significant transformation, with a growing focus on inclusive hiring practices. According to the latest TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship Outlook Report (Jan–Mar 2024–25), 64% of employers have expressed openness to hiring LGBTQIA+ apprentices—a clear step forward in building more diverse and equitable workplaces. While 24% of employers remain neutral, a visible shift is underway as leading sectors take deliberate steps to foster inclusion.
Tourism, hospitality, biotech & life sciences: Leading the way
The Tourism & Hospitality sector is at the forefront of this movement, with 72% of employers actively recruiting LGBTQIA+ apprentices. Close behind is the Biotech, Pharma & Life Sciences industry, where 66% of employers support inclusive hiring. These sectors recognise that diverse teams enhance guest experiences, improve service delivery, and create more inclusive work environments.
Global studies reinforce this trend—70% of LGBTQ+ professionals report positive career impact when they are out at work, and over 60% in India work with organisations that visibly support inclusion. The result: stronger employee engagement, better retention, and elevated business outcomes.
Electronics & telecom: Championing diversity with intent
The Electronic Systems & Electricals sector is equally committed, with 71% of employers open to LGBTQIA+ apprenticeships. With India targeting $500 billion in electronics manufacturing output by 2030, and expecting to generate 12 million jobs, inclusive hiring is critical to sustainable growth. Backed by government policies like the National Policy on Electronics (NPE) 2019 and the PLI scheme, this sector is using apprenticeships as a key tool to prepare a future-ready, inclusive workforce.
The Telecom industry mirrors this approach, also at 71% inclusion, embedding D&I into hiring strategies. As India’s digital transformation accelerates, telecom leaders are building diverse teams that reflect their customer base and support long-term business agility.
New frontiers: GCCs, drone tech, and emerging sectors join in
Beyond traditional sectors, Global Capability Centers (GCCs) and Drone Technology firms are embracing inclusive hiring, with 74% and 71% of employers respectively indicating openness to LGBTQIA+ apprentices. Even emerging sectors like EV & Mobility (38%) and Semiconductors (56%) show promising trends, reflecting a growing awareness of the strategic value of inclusive workplaces.
Building bridges: Beyond hiring to belonging
“The integration of LGBTQIA+ apprentices into India’s workforce marks a progressive shift toward true inclusivity,” said Dr Nipun Sharma, CEO at TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship.
He emphasised that apprenticeships serve as a vital link between education and employment—and now, as a vehicle for driving diversity. He called on companies to go beyond hiring and focus on building cultures that promote belonging, psychological safety, and career growth for LGBTQIA+ talent.
With proactive measures like policy reform, mentorship programs, and awareness initiatives, companies can move from intention to impact—ensuring equal opportunities for all.
Towards a more inclusive future
As more companies recognise diversity and inclusion as key business drivers, the trend of LGBTQIA+ participation in apprenticeships is poised to grow. By actively shaping inclusive hiring frameworks today, India is paving the way for a future-ready workforce that is not only skilled but also equitable and representative of all identities.
