India moves to the centre of global destination strategy

The inauguration of OTM 2026 marks a defining moment in the global travel industry’s engagement with India. Once viewed primarily as an emerging market, India has now become a central growth market, driven by rising disposable incomes, expanding international connectivity, and a growing appetite for long-haul, experiential, and high-value travel. This shift is visibly reflected at OTM 2026, where destinations are engaging with India through high-value, long-term trade promotions.

Inaugural programme sets the tone for OTM 2026

Day 1 of OTM 2026 opened with the official inauguration, a VIP walk-around, and exhibitor interactions, followed by the flagship programme “India Takes Its Place on the Global Travel Stage.” The inauguration was led by Datuk Manoharan Periasamy (Tourism Malaysia), Richard Duval (Minister of Tourism, Mauritius), H.E. Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah (Sarawak), and Hon. Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe (Sri Lanka), and moderated by Tanya Khanijow.

The afternoon featured the CEOs’ Lunch and the panel “India at 100 Million: The Global Race to Capture the Next Big Traveller Wave,” with leaders from Switzerland Tourism, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, Cayman Islands, Uzbekistan Tourism, Tourism Malaysia, and Atout France. The day concluded with a discussion on disruption in India’s online travel market, featuring CXOs from Cleartrip, MakeMyTrip, and Paytm Travel, moderated by Virendra Jain (VIDEC).

Driving global engagement and business outcomes

OTM 2026 sees strong participation from destinations across Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, the Americas, and Oceania, with nearly 50 global tourism boards officially present—marking the deepest engagement the global tourism ecosystem has had with India to date. Alongside established outbound markets, several emerging and experiential destinations are now engaging with India as a priority growth market. Aviation connectivity is also in focus, with Malaysia Airlines participating as the Partner Airline, alongside major carriers including Air India, highlighting the critical role of air links in supporting India’s expanding outbound travel.

Beyond destination and airline showcases, OTM 2026 reinforces its position as a focused B2B market-access platform, bringing together hotels, resorts, DMCs, cruise operators, travel technology providers, and niche travel segments through structured meetings and curated networking. As part of its global expansion, Fairfest Media has strengthened its international footprint with the acquisition of WTE Miami. Over the next two days, the agenda sharpens into segment-led discussions on leisure, corporate travel, weddings, marketing, distribution, AI-driven travel, trade evolution, and concludes with the Valedictory and Awards Function.

Leadership commentary

Commenting at the inauguration, Sanjiv Agarwal, Chairman & CEO, Fairfest Media Ltd., said, “OTM was created to reflect the reality of global travel today, where India is no longer an emerging opportunity but one of the most sought-after and strategic travel markets globally. The participation we see at OTM 2026 clearly demonstrates how the world is repositioning itself around the Indian traveller. OTM continues to serve as the leading travel show in Asia.”
