Maati Nature Resort, a tranquil retreat in the village of Janavali near Kankavli, ushered in New Year 2026 with a culturally rooted and serene celebration that drew deeply from the living traditions of the Konkan region. Moving away from loud festivities, the resort curated an evening centred on heritage, community and mindful celebration.
Reviving an 800-year-old folk theatre
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of Dashavatar, an 800-year-old folk theatre tradition traditionally performed by local farmers and artists. Narrating the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the performance served both as a cultural offering and a blessing for guests, while also helping preserve and spotlight a fading regional art form.
Midnight prayer and moments of reflection
As the clock struck midnight, a Malvani-style Garana prayer was performed for the wellbeing of all present. The moment stood out for its quiet intensity, reinforcing the night’s focus on reflection and collective harmony rather than spectacle.
Community, creativity and Konkan flavours
The celebration organically evolved into a shared, intimate gathering. Guests participated by singing, reciting poetry and sharing personal talents, while enjoying authentic Konkan dishes prepared on a traditional wooden chulha. The experience fostered a sense of connection—among guests, with nature, and with local culture.
One guest summed it up simply: “First time in life experienced a different environment, feeling, away from loud music, in the lap of nature.”
