A technical issue caused the Air India Dreamliner to return to Hong Kong after takeoff.
Shortly after takeoff on Monday, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner headed for New Delhi was forced to return to Hong Kong due to a possible technical issue.
FLIGHT UNDERGOING SAFETY CHECKS
Only a few days have passed since a tragic crash involving another Air India Boeing 787. 241 of the 242 passengers on that flight, which was bound for London, perished when it crashed in Ahmedabad, a city in western India, shortly after takeoff.
Air India acknowledged in a statement on Monday that flight AI315 had returned to Hong Kong because of “a technical issue,” but it did not provide any specifics. The airline added that the aircraft landed safely and was undergoing checks “as a matter of abundant precaution.
According to Mint, an Air India spokesperson said, “AI315 operating from Hong Kong to Delhi on 16 June 2025 air-returned to Hong Kong shortly after take off due to a technical issue. The flight landed safely at Hong Kong and is undergoing checks as a matter of abundant precaution. Alternative arrangements have been planned to fly the passengers to their destination Delhi at the earliest.”
The flight, incidentally, was already three hours late. Adding to passenger anxiety, it returned to Hong Kong International Airport after being airborne for nearly 1 hour 19 minutes, Flightradar24 data shows.
