A New Journey Has Just Begun

Interviewed by Sriya Ray Chaudhuri
What changes have you initiated at Sofitel Mumbai BKC since you took over as the GM?
My intent has mainly been to accentuate the Sofitel DNA and the three key brand pillars of the hotel — design and innovation; culture and events; and gastronomy and wine — through a series of elite events, performances, experiences and personalised services at the Sofitel Mumbai BKC, thus delivering an indelible guest experience at this beautiful property. Since coming aboard, we have seen a host of activities focussed on these three brand pillars.
We introduced the Artisan Gifting Corner with the intention of offering exclusive designer bouquets and handcrafted chocolates for neighbouring corporate houses to ease their gifting options since there is no such facility currently available in the financial district of the BKC.
We have hosted many famous designers and music bands and even planned the launch of our outdoor venue, Hriday.A number of activities have been organised in the F&B segment too. I also aim to make the hotel abuzz with activity and raise awareness of the brand and its offerings. A new journey has just begun and Sofitel Mumbai BKC will continue to make waves in Mumbai.

What has been the biggest disaster you averted?
Since I have just started as the GM of Sofitel Mumbai BKC, I will cite an example from my stint as general manager, Moevenpick Bengaluru. The Pakistani cricket team had checked into the hotel and the captain, who was visually challenged, accidentally sipped some detergent, assuming it was a beverage. The media picked up on the story that I had to retrieve within 24 hours else this would have tarnished the reputation of the brand and the hotel.

What is the best thing about your job?
A hotel is a living organism with a soul. As a general manager, one is in tune with all five senses and this is what I enjoy the most.

And the worst thing?
I am very fond of reading, listening to music and archery. However, I do not have enough time to pursue these hobbies yet I manage to take time out for these pursuits. Thanks to technology, I read and listen to music on my Kindle.

Your take on the Indian hospitality market vis-a-vis the global markets?
India is very much a part of the world today; we are no longer isolated. The country is significantly impacted by the volatility of the international markets. We are a global player and the economic actions of the country now impact the rest of the world — the country is a force to be reckoned with. I once read a book named ‘The Borderless World’ by Kenichi Ohmae that foretold what is actually happening today.

If not an hotelier, what would you have become?
I love writing poetry. Had I not been an hotelier, I would surely have become a poet.

Your pet peeve with regards to hotels?
As a general manager, one cannot afford to have a pet peeve. Every day there is a new situation that sometimes gets me ‘peeved’. However, at times there is ‘peace’. It comes down to basically dealing a situation, which comes with experience and interacting with people from different walks of life.
