NRAI requests CCI to investigate ‘anti-competitive practices’ by Zomato, Swiggy

The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) has filed a complaint with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) against Swiggy and Zomato. It claimed that the food aggregators were indulging in ‘anti-competitive practices’.

The association highlighted that restaurants are suffering due to these practices as the two players bundle services, mask data, charge exorbitant commissions, do deep discounting, violate the principles of platform neutrality and have lack of transparency. NRAI recently requested a complete probe against Zomato and Swiggy.

“We have been in constant dialogue with the food service aggregators over last 15-18 months to resolve critical issues impacting the sector. However, despite all our efforts, we have unfortunately not been able to resolve them with the aggregators. The needle hasn’t moved much on these issues,” said Anurag Katriar, President, NRAI.

He adds that as a result of this inaction, NRAI has requested the CCI to investigate the food tech companies.

“We are committed to the cause of our partners, and we will put our best efforts with the CCI to ensure that the practices of these marketplace platforms are aligned to the benefit of the entire F&B industry,” Katriar stated.
