India is a land of festivals. Every tradition and festival is celebrated with equal zeal and enthusiasm. Hence, every festive season necessitates a glamorous makeover for your home. These makeovers elevate the spirit and create a pleasant atmosphere for the festival. Festive revamps must be done keeping user preferences in mind and reflecting one’s personal style. With a string of festivals approaching, Here is a list of home décor ideas to welcome the festive season from various industry experts.

Pick Right Colours

Ar. Smriti Raheja Sawhney, Founder of DesignEx, believes in “Choosing the right colours to complement various aspects of home decor.” She suggests, “If the walls are solid in colour, choose printed upholstery such as printed drapes, cushions, and bedspreads. If elegant solid-coloured upholsteries are the choice, try something new and paint the wall with an eye-catching yet complementary colour and pattern.”

Experiment with Lighting

Ar. Sumit Dhawan, Founder & Principal Architect at Cityspace’ 82 Architects states, “Diwali is that time of the year when everything lights up. Light is crucially significant in boosting or adding an impression of distinctiveness to a space. Combining lights has turned into a remarkable trend for decorating homes this season. Bring out all the lights, including earthen/LED diyas, candles, tea lights, fairy lights, string lights, and everything else you have. Placing lights in bright glassware intensifies the home in the most incredible way. Nothing beats well-executed lighting to amp up the festive aura!”

Bring in Metal Elements

Ar. Khozema Chitalwala, Principal Designer at Designers Group affirms, “One of the foremost decor trends this season is to highlight traditional metals like brass, bronze, and copper. Accessories made of these metals, such as diyas, decorative elements, and idols, add a classic flair to the festival. Combine these with fresh flowers and some artefacts to make it aesthetically appealing. To give the space a festive appearance, use the variation to decorate every nook and cranny- the area under the staircase, or a centre table in the lounge. Furthermore, bring in old metal ornaments and organise them skillfully at the entrance along with other artefacts to make the entryway visually pleasing.”

Accessorise

Ar. Anil Badan, Principal Architect and Founder at Studio B Architects, shares his expertise stating, “Adorn the corners of any space with accessories. While wooden furniture has a natural charm, antique decor pieces can be used to make a statement. Choose modest elements that speak of celebrations. Flowers, wind chimes, pots, and stylish centrepieces can add life to the corners. Along with small details, dramatic showpieces or pendants can be used to enhance festive aesthetics even more.”

Infuse Scents

Ar. Sumit Dhawan shares his perspective saying, “A home should not only look pleasant, but it should also smell great.” Consider walking into a home that appears straight out of a decor magazine but lacks a pleasant scent. Fortunately, multiple options exist for diffusing bad odours and keeping the home smelling fresh all day. Refresh the environment with some fragrant flowers. Fresh flowers plucked from the garden, and organic candle diffusers can evoke a delightful atmosphere. Hence, let the magic of festivals be woven by the flavorful scents.

Embrace Fresh Flowers

Ar. Anil Badan enunciates, “If artificial fragrance does not appeal to you, it is time to look for some fresh flowers.” Sometimes all that is required to make the aroma of a place charming at any time of day is bringing in a bouquet of roses or a bunch of marigolds. Fresh flowers not only add a pleasant scent to the atmosphere but also make it appear vibrant and cheerful. Moving one step further, people can even pick various flowers for the different festival days following the theme.

Tapestry and Upholstery

Ar. Smriti Raheja Sawhney adds, “Upgrading upholstery, such as covers and table runners, is an ideal method of creating a makeover. Rolling out a rug or just some colourful cushions can completely transform the space, giving it a new look and feel, and it is also a cost-effective option. Traditional rugs, which typically don’t go well with everyday décor, can also be used in lounging spaces or at sit-down card parties to add to the festive atmosphere this Diwali.”

Artistic Enchantment

Ar. Khozema Chitalwala asserts “Art is the creative expression of a person. Interior accessories and artistic items lend a classic and stylish appearance to the ambience. Art always adds drama and style to a space. Most interestingly, the colour of art introduces the true spirit of creativity with a touch of quirkiness. The space will take on a distinctive look if it uses bold colours with a fibreglass sculpture or a table with an artistic combination of functional art.”

These decorating ideas can serve as a final checklist to assist people in organizing their homes before the guests arrive. Most importantly, take a break and enjoy the festival with loved ones to create treasured memories.
