Goa is poised to add a significant cultural landmark to its tourism map with the upcoming Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Digital Museum at Farmagudi, Ponda. The project was announced in a press briefing held at Paryatan Bhavan by Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte, Director of Tourism Kedar Naik, and GTDC Managing Director Kuldeep Arolkar.
Project Overview and Funding
The museum is being developed under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) Scheme of the Government of India. The estimated project cost is ₹125.59 crore, with ₹97.46 crore coming from central assistance and ₹28 crore from the State Government. The construction is planned in two phases:
- Phase I: Civil works including landscaping, public amenities, parking, and infrastructure development.
- Phase II: Multimedia installations, projection mapping, and a light and sound show.
Vision and Cultural Significance
“This entire project is a cultural and spiritual tourism ecosystem that will enhance our cultural pride while preserving and promoting the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji for future generations. This will be the most iconic project Goa will have,” said Minister Khaunte.
Economic and Social Impact
Beyond historical importance, the museum is expected to stimulate local economic activity, supporting allied tourism services, generating employment for Goans, and offering a platform for local artisans and artists. The site will host year-round public programs, exhibitions, and cultural gatherings, enriching the region’s vibrancy and boosting hinterland tourism.
Government’s Strategic Vision
Working under the Double Engine Sarkar and the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, the government is advancing Tourism 2.0, which promotes regenerative tourism based on the pillars of economy, society, and culture. The project aligns with the “Goa Beyond Beaches” vision, emphasizing inclusive development and cultural awareness.
Additional Initiatives
Several other projects are underway, including the Rudreshwar Temple premises, Ghat arti at Narve, and the Harvalem Falls project, all aimed at promoting Goa’s cultural tourism.
Project Timeline and Legacy
Covering 29,212 square metres including the existing fort area, the museum is one of Goa Tourism Department’s most iconic upcoming developments. The project is scheduled for completion by March–April 2026, symbolizing the government’s commitment to blending heritage preservation with sustainable growth to secure Goa’s unique identity for the future.
