A new travel revolution is unfolding in India — and it’s driven by emotion, not age. According to the “The Future of Travel 2025: From Dreamers to Doers – India’s Global Travel Generation” report by FINN Partners and GSIQ, 81% of Indian travellers now prioritize spending on luxury travel experiences over lavish weddings.
This shift reflects a deeper generational change in how Indians define indulgence, trading gold and glamour for global adventures and memory-making moments. The study, which surveyed 2,000 Indian international leisure travellers, sheds light on evolving motivations, behaviours, and emotional triggers across GenZ, Millennials, and GenX.
Travel as the Ultimate Expression of Self
As Shivani Gupta, Managing Partner of FINN Partners, puts it, “Indian travellers are no longer just dreaming. They are doing with intent, emotional clarity, and rising global fluency.” In this modern era, travel has become the ultimate expression of self, more cherished than traditional markers of success such as weddings or luxury goods.
Immersive Memories Over Material Possessions
The report shows that 74% of Indian travellers would choose travel experiences over designer purchases, and 56% value hotel upgrades more than flight upgrades. This emotional shift is evident across all generations, with Indian travellers increasingly prioritizing how they want to feel rather than just what they want to see. Fun and adventure (48%), cultural discovery (47%), and emotional rejuvenation (especially among GenZ) are the top motivations for travel in 2025.
GenZ Leads: The ‘Live the Dream Now’ Travel Mantra
GenZ is driving this transformation, prioritizing experiences over possessions and spontaneity over planning. From serene zen gardens in Kyoto to desert safaris in Dubai, GenZ curates their travel inspiration from platforms like Instagram and YouTube. A stunning vlog now has the power to convert desire into bookings faster than any brochure.
GenZ’s reliance on social media for travel inspiration — 53% cite YouTube as their primary source — is reshaping travel decisions, with emotional storytelling playing a central role. This generation values authenticity and boutique stays, moving away from traditional luxury options.
A Shift in Travel Decision-Making
With 95% of GenZ incorporating international travel into their financial planning, this digitally native generation is reshaping the way people plan their travels, influencing both Millennials and GenX. As Debbie Flynn, Managing Partner at FINN Partners, notes, “Indian travellers have emerged as world-shaping consumers of culture, luxury, and story-rich experiences.”
Rewiring Travel Industry Strategies
To keep pace with this shift, the travel industry must rethink its strategies. According to Eva Stewart, Managing Partner at GSIQ Tourism Insights, “From local startups to global airlines, travel brands are customizing their offerings to meet Indian travellers’ needs, with more flight options, better prices, and services that resonate.” India’s middle class is increasingly exploring the world, and as their influence grows, the international tourism landscape will continue to evolve.
Engaging the Emotional Travel Persona
Indian outbound travel is high-spending, emotionally driven, and action-oriented. To engage this audience, travel brands, tourism boards, content creators, and luxury platforms must focus on emotional personas rather than just demographics. It’s about showcasing the emotional experience of a trip, not just what’s included. Personalised journeys centred on rejuvenation, cultural storytelling, and connection will resonate deeply with this audience.
