Forestry Innovation Investment (FII), known in India as Canadian Wood, is a crown corporation of the Government of British Columbia, Canada’s westernmost province. FII promotes B.C.’s wood products and technologies in international markets, including India. The organization is a pioneer in advocating for sustainability and the use of environmentally friendly building materials, alongside green building practices. FII provides technical support and guidance to eco-friendly projects.
Canadian Wood hosts seminars and workshops to educate and train its target audience about the use of natural materials such as wood. By sharing best practices in manufacturing and information on certification, sustainability, and legality of imported wood, they assist architects, designers, builders, developers, and project owners in selecting appropriate species and grades for specific applications.
Certification of Canadian wood products by independent global audit bodies such as PEFC and FSC demonstrates Canada’s commitment to responsible forestry. This approach combats global warming caused by deforestation and habitat destruction, thereby mitigating carbon footprints. These certifications enhance brand trust and appeal to environmentally conscious manufacturers and consumers, encouraging responsible consumption to ensure that wood resources remain available indefinitely.
Canadian Wood offers five distinct species, each with unique properties suitable for various uses in both remanufacturing and structural applications:
- Western Hemlock: Prized for its fine texture and straight, uniform grain, Western Hemlock’s reduced moisture content after proper kiln seasoning provides resistance to decay, stability, and strength. This makes it an excellent choice for applications such as indoor furniture, interior fit-outs, mouldings, and general construction. Its even grain offers superb machining properties, making it ideal for a variety of uses.
- Douglas Fir: Recognized globally for its superior strength-to-weight ratio, Douglas Fir is the preferred species for heavy structural applications, including post and beam construction. This wood is also favored for glue-laminated beams (glulam), roofing structures, doors, door jambs, and millwork, where both strength and aesthetic appeal are important.
- Yellow Cedar: A naturally durable wood that performs exceptionally well against natural elements and insects. Known for its fine texture and straight grain, Yellow Cedar is widely used in marine applications, such as oars and marine pilings, as well as for shingles and decorative paneling. Its structural grades are suitable for outdoor applications like doors and door frames, windows and window frames, outdoor furniture, pergolas, cladding, decking, and landscaping, combining beauty with durability.
- Western Red Cedar: Perhaps the lightest naturally durable wood known, Western Red Cedar has exceptional resistance to rot, termites, and decay. It is perfect for exterior applications like roofing shingles, siding, decking, cladding, outdoor furniture, pergolas, gazebos, and greenhouses. Its rich color and soft texture also make it an ideal material for interior design, including paneling, furniture, and cabinetry.
- SPF (Spruce-Pine-Fir): A group of three species—Engelmann Spruce, Lodgepole Pine, and Subalpine Fir—that grow together and are thus harvested and processed together. SPF is known for its high strength-to-weight ratio and dimensional stability. It is predominantly used for framing and building with wood, thanks to its superior gluing properties and stress rating. Due to its versatile nature, it is also commonly used for furniture, packaging, crating, and pelleting.
All Canadian wood species are legally harvested from sustainably managed forests, certified by internationally recognized standards. The Canadian forest products industry plants three times more trees than it harvests annually to preserve the environment and its biodiversity. This commitment ensures that, despite Canada being a leading softwood lumber exporter, deforestation is not a concern.
In line with its brand ethos, Canadian Wood is participating in the IndiaWood Trade Fair, scheduled from sixth to ninth March 2025, at the India Expo Mart (IEML) in Greater Noida (Delhi/NCR). A 160-square-meter island stall, open on three sides, is being set up to showcase products made from Canadian wood species and to welcome the target audience.
The stall will also feature Canadian Wood suppliers from B.C., Canada, who will engage with Indian buyers during the trade fair. These lumber companies prioritize responsible forest management and fair-trade practices, ensuring that Canadian wood meets the highest environmental and corporate responsibility standards, including community engagement and the empowerment of local stakeholders. This reinforces Canadian Wood’s commitment to both sustainability and environmentally fair trade practices.
