European fruit and vegetables represent a world of quality, authenticity, and taste, all deeply appealing for the growing number of foodies in India. From olives to kiwis, Indian consumers are well-known for their love of fruits and vegetables and are always on the lookout for new and unique produce to add to their diets. Many more Indian consumers are exploring their newfound love for international cuisines that are rich with exotic fruits and vegetables. With the increasing demand for these exotic fruits and vegetables, it is essential to consider their origin and the quality standards maintained during production. This is where the European Union (EU) comes in.
Fruits and vegetables form the cornerstone of Indian and European diets, encompassing a wide array from tomatoes to peppers, eggplants, and beyond. In the EU, fruits and vegetables embody a legacy of centuries-old farming practices and dedication, fostering a rich tapestry of flavours cherished worldwide. From the sun-kissed sweetness of ripe strawberries to the earthy richness of plump tomatoes, every fruit and vegetable tells a story of growth and nourishment – and outstanding production processes.
India and the European Union
India is the EU’s tenth biggest export market accounting for 2.1% of the EU’s total trade of goods in 2021. The EU’s commitment to sustainable farming practices and innovative technologies makes European produce even more attractive to the Indian consumer. As French, Italian, and Mediterranean cuisines garner traction in the Indian market, the demand for fruits and vegetables is also increasing. According to official data, fruits and vegetables produced in the EU in 2022 represented over 14% of the continent’s agricultural output. As the appetite for EU products grows across India, importers are presented with even more interesting opportunities when it comes to business.
The EU’s Pillars of Excellence: Sustainability, Authenticity, Quality, and Safety
Europe’s diverse geography, climate conditions, and history have fostered sustainable cultivation of wide variety of fruits and vegetables, preserving their authenticity. Apple trees are Europe’s most famous fruit trees, with each orchard producing apples with distinct flavours, textures, and colours. Europe is renowned for its exceptional range of flavourful apples, such as JabÅ‚ka grójeckie, a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) from Poland that is perfect for desserts, and Mela Alto Adige / Südtiroler Apfel, PGI from Italy, where the Alpine and Mediterranean landscapes intersect. The PGI label requires that at least one part of the production, processing, or preparation of the product takes place in the region to which the indication applies.
The Mediterranean region is home to a rich variety of olives, each with its own unique flavour profile. From small and intensely flavoured Picholine olives of France to the sweet White olives of Malta, the diversity adds depth to Mediterranean cuisine. Olives can either be enjoyed as a snack or be used to enrich salads, enhance the flavour of stews, and bring a briny kick to pasta sauces.
The European Union also boasts over 2,600 tomato varieties, including cherry, grape, round, and coeur de boeuf. Another example of a high-quality product is Kalamata olive oil PDO, which is exclusively produced in the Kalamata region of Greece using specific olive varieties. To be recognised as a PDO product, every aspect of the production, processing, and preparation process must occur in the specified area.
The EU has always been a strong supporter of fruit and vegetable sector through various regulations which sets rules for producer organisations to adhere to strict safety standards and quality checks. In 2018, the EU allocated €865 million for the fruit and vegetable market highlighting its commitment to supporting the sector’s growth and prosperity.
