Suhail Kannampilly, Managing Director, The Fern Hotels & Resorts.

Suhail Kannampilly, an IHM Mumbai alumnus, has accumulated over 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry, honing his exceptional business acumen. He has played a pivotal role in Concept Hospitality’s growth and the triumphant expansion of the Fern brand throughout India. In 2015, he introduced Beacon as an economical hotel brand, with a visionary goal of achieving 100 operational hotels by 2023.

Suhail has consistently ensured high operating standards across the entire portfolio. The Fern Hotels & Resorts’ 100th property milestone marks the culmination of his unwavering dedication and serves as a testament to his leadership and strategic vision.

Excerpts from our interview with him:

  • Did you always want to be an hotelier? What triggered your interest in hospitality?

Well, throughout school, I was more influenced by my mother’s side of the family and wanted to become a dentist. However, hospitality and becoming an hotelier was the most fulfilling choice. As I pursued my education from IHM Mumbai, the experiences provided invaluable insights into the dynamic and fast-paced nature of the industry.

Additionally, I was fortunate to have my father, Param Kannamilly, as my mentor who guided and inspired me along the way. The ability to make a positive impact on people’s lives, both guests and team members alike, continues to be a driving force behind my dedication to the hospitality industry.

  • How did The Fern Hotels & Resorts come into place?

The Company was founded way back in 1996 by my father as a consultancy and management company. At the point when he was with KHIL (Kamat Hotels India Limited), we would white label hotels and operate them. In 2009, when we founded The Fern as a brand, it was a spur of the moment branding, after some earlier name trademark conflicts. After being a white labelled management company for a decade before that, the need for a brand to synergize became evident. The company has now grown from strength to strength with six brands in its portfolio and has over 100+ hotels in India.

  • So far, how has the company’s growth been (with respect to the Indian market)?

We have witnessed consistent growth in our portfolio of properties in India, expanding to new destinations and attracting both domestic and international guests. Our hotels and resorts are strategically located in key business hubs, leisure destinations and tourist hotspots, catering to diverse traveller preferences. Our commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices has resonated well with the Indian market. Overall, the growth of The Fern Hotels & Resorts in the Indian market has been promising and encouraging. We are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and confident in our ability to continue delivering exceptional hospitality experiences to our valued guests. We have more than 100 hotels in India.

  • As a successful hotelier, what is your success mantra?

When it comes to achieving success in the hospitality industry, my mantra revolves around three key principles: passion, personalization, and perseverance. By embodying these principles, I have been able to navigate the ever-changing landscape of the hotel industry and drive positive outcomes for The Fern Hotels & Resorts. Of course, the success we achieve is also a result of the collective efforts of our dedicated team members and the support of our valued guests.

I am a believer in The Peter Principle which states that, if you perform well in your job, you will likely be promoted to the next level of your organization’s hierarchy. You will continue to rise the ladder until you reach the point where you can no longer perform well. The only way to break that cycle is continued learning.

  • Can you share a few moments in your journey which has made you the hotelier you are today?

Management training was a good learning; it gave me two advantages: A crash course on the actual functioning of all the departments in the hotel; and to view from a step above.
When I joined the industry, I was told that the best way to grow is to see the issue from a step above, this helps you with a rounded perspective and a target on the larger picture. After spending six years in the operations at various hotels, I moved to the corporate office, understanding the finance and viability bit of hotels. I strongly believe in continuous learning, be it through exposure or self-learning. It is important to keep challenging yourself and step out of your comfort zone.

  • With ESG, AI and sustainability emerging into hospitality, what according to you, will drive the future of hospitality?

I believe that several key factors will shape the future of our industry.

Ethical and Social Responsibility: Social responsibility and ethical business practices will be paramount in the future of hospitality. Guests will seek out hotels that demonstrate a commitment to ethical sourcing, fair employment practices, community engagement, and diversity and inclusion. Hotels that prioritize ESG principles will resonate with socially conscious travellers.

Sustainable Practices: Sustainability will continue to be a driving force in the hospitality industry. As guests become more conscious of their environmental impact, they will seek out eco-friendly accommodations that prioritize sustainability and responsible practices. Embracing renewable energy, reducing carbon footprints, and implementing green initiatives will be crucial for hotels to thrive in the future.

Technology and AI Integration: The integration of advanced technologies and AI will revolutionize the guest experience. From seamless check-ins and smart room controls to personalized recommendations and enhanced guest interactions, technology will play a pivotal role in delivering convenience, personalization, and efficiency. AI-driven data analytics will also help hotels make informed decisions, optimize operations, and enhance guest satisfaction.

By embracing these trends and adapting to evolving guest preferences, we can shape a future where sustainability, technology, personalization, and social responsibility coexist to deliver extraordinary guest experiences.

  • If you had one piece of advice for aspiring hotel GMs what would it be?

One thing I brief all my managers is just because something has not worked in the past doesn’t mean it won’t today. A lot of times, the circumstances change creating a new dynamism for growth. It is important to keep trying.

  • What is your vision for The Fern Hotels & Resorts?

My future vision for The Fern Hotels & Resorts revolves around delivering exceptional guest experiences, practicing sustainability, expanding our portfolio, embracing innovation, nurturing a collaborative culture, and upholding a strong brand reputation.
