Union Budget 2026: IIM to upskill tourism workforce

Union Budget 2026 puts tourism at the centre of jobs and growth...

IIM

In the Union Budget 2026, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman underscored tourism as a powerful engine for employment generation, foreign exchange earnings, and local economic growth across India.

National Institute of Hospitality to be born

A key announcement was the proposal to set up a National Institute of Hospitality by upgrading the existing National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT). The new institute will serve as a bridge between academia, industry, and government, strengthening professional education and aligning hospitality skills with evolving industry needs.

IIM to back Tourism

To enhance visitor experience at key destinations, the Finance Minister also announced a pilot upskilling programme for 10,000 tourist guides across 20 iconic tourist sites. The initiative will deliver a standardised, high-quality 12-week training course in hybrid mode, developed in collaboration with an Indian Institute of Management (IIM), focusing on knowledge, service quality, and global best practices.

The Big Grid

Further strengthening the sectorโ€™s knowledge backbone, the Budget proposes the creation of a National Destination Digital Knowledge Grid. This platform will digitally document Indiaโ€™s cultural, spiritual, and heritage destinations, while generating new employment opportunities for local researchers, historians, content creators, and technology partners.

Together, these measures signal a shift toward building a skilled, digitally empowered, and experience-driven tourism ecosystemโ€”positioning hospitality and tourism as central pillars in Indiaโ€™s long-term economic and cultural growth story.
