Tourism and Hospitality Skill Council (THSC) is not whether technology can replace
the human element, but how it can validate it with greater precision. Artificial
Intelligence (AI) is emerging as the critical bridge between mass skilling and
premium service standards.
The shift: From subjective observation to data-driven insight
In the past, assessing a candidate’s ability to handle an irate guest depended entirely
on the subjective opinion of a single examiner. Today, AI-driven assessment tools
allow us to standardize this process across thousands of candidates simultaneously,
ensuring that a certification in a remote town holds the same weight as one in a
metropolitan hub.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for remote assessment solutions
became urgent. With traditional methods of face-to-face testing no longer feasible,
AI-based simulations/monitoring became a lifeline.
Simulating real-world scenarios (The “Digital Role-Play”)
Hospitality is not about memorizing textbooks; it is about reaction and behaviour. AI
can now power dynamic role-playing simulations. Imagine a Front Office Executive
candidate interacting with an AI-based avatar acting as a “distressed guest.” The AI
doesn’t just grade the candidate on what they say, but analyses how they say
it—evaluating tone, empathy, and conflict resolution skills in real-time. This allows us
to test “soft skills” with hard data.
For instance, AI-based role-playing was widely adopted to train staff during the
pandemic. The simulations included scenarios where guests were concerned about
social distancing, sanitation procedures, and COVID-19 safety measures. Staff
members were trained to respond to these situations in real-time, with AI providing
instant feedback on their tone, empathy, and ability to resolve the issue calmly. This
helped reduce customer anxiety and ensured that employees were well-prepared to
handle emerging challenges.
Removing bias and enhancing objectivity
One of the greatest challenges in skill certification is inter-rater reliability—ensuring
two different examiners give the same score for the same performance. AI-based
grading systems for technical tasks (like table setups or housekeeping standards via
video analysis) eliminate unconscious bias. This ensures that our certifications are
meritocratic and globally respected.
Instant feedback and personalised learning paths
Traditional assessments end with a “Pass” or “Fail.” AI transforms assessment into a
diagnostic tool. If a candidate fails a module on food safety, AI can instantly pinpoint
exactly why—was it temperature control or cross-contamination? This shifts the
focus from filtering candidates out to building them up.
In a world where the hospitality industry faces constant change—whether due to new
health regulations or evolving customer expectations—AI can provide real-time,
personalized feedback.
For example, hotels may use AI to assess food safety protocols for its kitchen staff.
The AI system would analyse real-time video of the chefs preparing meals,
evaluating if they were maintaining social distancing, wearing appropriate PPE, and
following sanitization protocols. If a chef failed to meet a particular standard, AI
would provide immediate feedback and direct them to specific training videos or
modules to correct their practices.
Scalability and remote proctoring
This becomes particularly significant for MSMEs and hospitality establishments in
Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, where resources are limited but the need for standardised,
high-quality skill assessment is equally critical. AI-proctored exams use facial
recognition and behaviour analysis to prevent malpractice, allowing us to conduct
high-stakes certification exams remotely. This democratizes access to certification,
allowing talent from every corner of the country to prove their worth.
For instance, AI-driven assessments to evaluate front desk staff remotely. Using

the proctored exam, ensuring they didn’t resort to cheating. This not only reduces the
need for physical infrastructure to monitor exams but also enables recruitment of
skilled professionals without requiring relocation or travel, which was especially
critical.
No need to develop new infrastructure
In many hospitality businesses, developing new infrastructure for training or
assessments can be cost-prohibitive and time-consuming. AI-powered assessments
have eliminated this need, allowing businesses to conduct high-quality evaluations
without the investment in physical infrastructure.
The AI system provide feedback on the employees’ performance, ensuring they were
up to date with the latest industry standards, and certifying them remotely without
needing to gather in large groups.
