Studio Lotus’ redevelopment of Taj Sawai, a sixty-key wildlife retreat abutting the Ranthambore National Park, seamlessly combines the Taj Group’s signature hospitality with an experience rooted in the region’s biodiversity, crafts, and layered history.
Design Brief and Concept
A detailed study of the site revealed opportunities for a complete spatial and experiential overhaul; redefining guest circulation, arrival, and the connection between built and natural environments. The redesign sought to restore privacy, shade, and cohesion while reestablishing a strong relationship with the surrounding forested landscape.
Enhancing Circulation and Landscape Integration
The design reimagines the property’s layout through strategic site-level and programmatic interventions that improve circulation and functional efficiency. Public buildings have been re-envisioned as light pavilions framing terraces, water bodies, and scenic views.
The arrival sequence unfolds through three interlinked courts, featuring a redefined reception pavilion, a waterbody-framed concierge area, and an outdoor bar inspired by a jungle watering hole; each designed to create moments of discovery and connection.
Pool, Dining, and Leisure Spaces
The pool area, once a stepwell, has been revived through adaptive reuse of existing structures, now housing The Grill restaurant, a poolside bar, and an upper-level Whiskey Lounge.
The expansive lawn has been transformed with intimate landscaped pockets, children’s play areas, and shaded lounging zones, fostering interaction while ensuring privacy for the surrounding villas.
Local Materials and Craft Heritage
Rooted in sustainability, much of the existing structure has been retained to reduce the project’s carbon footprint. Minimalist white-plastered interiors are enriched with tactile layers—wooden millwork, hand-crafted furniture in wenge and walnut, and earthy textiles inspired by the surrounding forest.
Local artistry plays a central role: from carved headboards and Rajasthani miniature-style ceiling panels to handmade black pottery tiles crafted by Sawai Madhopur’s last remaining artisans, adding depth and regional authenticity to the interiors.
Reimagining the Villas
Grouped in clusters of four, the villas have been redesigned as forest bungalows that blend privacy with openness. Wooden portals mark the entry to each cluster, while lush vegetation and shaded verandahs create tranquil private retreats.
Inside, the design reflects Ranthambore’s deciduous landscape, with Kota stone flooring, bamboo-mat ceilings, and furnishings in warm tones. Bone inlay detailing, CNC-carved panels inspired by tiger stripes, and hand-block printed textiles celebrate local craftsmanship in every detail.

Through thoughtful spatial interventions and a locally inspired material and craft narrative, Studio Lotus has given Taj Sawai a renewed identity that balances luxury with contextual sensitivity.
