How two gritty women are building a people powerhouse

Born during the global lockdown, The People Network, led by Anupama Jaiswal and Ambika Gautam, has redefined leadership search across hospitality, real estate, and beyond through empathy, strategy and grit.

Four years ago, as the world fell silent under the weight of a global pandemic and certainty vanished, founder Natwar Nagar proposed launching a venture that would reimagine human capital advisory. That vision found its champions in Anupama Jaiswal and Ambika Gautam, two women leaders who transformed an audacious idea into reality, building The People Network from modest home workspaces into one of India’s most respected talent acquisition firms.

Leadership expertise of Ambika Gautam

Ambika Gautam brings over two decades of talent acquisition experience, orchestrating leadership succession and team placements for the real estate, hospitality, and allied sectors. “Real estate in India is more than bricks and mortar — it’s ambition, transformation, and vision. Over the years, I’ve worked alongside some of the industry’s most influential players, helping them find the leaders who don’t just manage growth, but inspire it,” she shares. From legacy builders reshaping skylines to private equity funds disrupting the norm, she specialises in strategic leadership searches that align people with purpose, ensuring the right minds are at the helm of the right missions.

As a Founder-Partner at The People Network, Ambika continues to nurture the firm’s vision of serving organisations’ strategic and tactical people imperatives. Before this, she was part of HVS and Hotelivate, providing full-service search consulting and execution to the global hospitality realm, focusing on India’s real estate, restaurant, and retail sectors. Armed with a Psychology degree from LSR and an MBA in Human Resources, she applies deep organisational insight to craft nuanced, service-industry-focused talent strategies. Outside work, she enjoys travel, art, antiques, and exploring culinary experiences.

Leadership expertise of Anupama Jaiswal

Anupama Jaiswal, on the other hand, brings 27 years of rich professional experience spanning hospitality operations, learning and organisation development, and executive search. A hotel management graduate, she began her career with Taj, Le Meridien, and Hyatt, before discovering a passion for learning and organisation development. Transitioning into the emerging ITES sector, she contributed to leading HR consulting firms such as Aon Hewitt, and later worked with executive search firms including HVS and Hotelivate, shaping leadership hiring practices across hospitality, F&B, and allied service industries.

In her executive search career, she has executed multiple C-suite and senior leadership mandates across hospitality, real estate, automotive, logistics, and education sectors. She also led pioneering compensation and payroll benchmarking studies, enabling new hotel brands to design effective operating frameworks. “We’re building this with heart and hustle — from our homes,” she says, encapsulating the firm’s ethos.

Turning crisis into opportunity

While lockdowns created uncertainty for many, Anupama and Ambika saw an opportunity: the pandemic had made hiring top talent even more crucial for companies navigating uncharted waters. Firms were quietly seeking executives who could pivot, rebuild, and innovate — and they needed help finding them.

The People Network’s model was simple but effective:

  • Deep research into client culture and market mapping.
  • Personalised candidate engagement.
  • Remote-first operations that kept costs low and margins high.

Leveraging their extensive networks and long-standing industry relationships, the firm represented qualified candidates faster, closing multiple mandates in record time. Deep research into client culture became their differentiator, while remote operations allowed broader talent outreach without compromising quality.

During this period, the firm witnessed nearly a 40% surge in leadership hiring across logistics and warehousing, driven by post-pandemic expansion. A leading real estate fund entrusted The People Network with multiple leadership hires to build its core team. These early wins not only showcased the firm’s market insight but also cemented its reputation for executing high-impact leadership searches across real estate and hospitality.

Scaling up: From solopreneurs to a boutique powerhouse

From early mornings at home with laptops and tea to delivering over 250 bespoke assignments across ten sectors, The People Network has grown dynamically. Its assignments span family offices, start-ups, hospitality, real estate, F&B, logistics, and more.

In the first year alone, the firm onboarded 20 new clients, many first-time partnerships, proving its expertise, reliability, and delivery excellence. Today, nearly 60% of clients are repeat engagements, a testament to trust built over mandates executed with precision and insight.

Despite a lean team of five, The People Network achieved a 62.68% total fee growth from inception, venturing into emerging markets such as data centres, logistics, and warehousing. They tackle mandates that are novel, complex, and previously uncharted — pioneering solutions where none existed before.

“Our strength was never in pretending to be big. It was in being real — and being relentless,” both founders echo, capturing the spirit that drives their enterprise.

Culture & leadership: Women at the helm

The firm’s culture, guided by Nagar’s vision and anchored by Jaiswal and Gautam, is fiercely independent. Each professional shapes their own schedule; impact is measured not by office presence but by quality of outcomes. Compensation is generous, performance-aligned, and paired with meaningful equity ownership.

This approach has fostered a tight-knit community of women leaders, many of whom are mothers balancing work and family. Eighty percent of the team are women, contributing exceptional dedication while embracing flexible, outcome-driven schedules. “We weren’t just hiring executives. We were leading by example — showing the world that success doesn’t always wear a suit or sit behind a glossy desk,” they note.

Their story demonstrates that leadership is not defined by location or convention but by trust, shared vision, and resilience. It’s a quiet revolution proving that ambition and family life can coexist, and that women can lead with impact and authenticity.

Breaking barriers, redefining success

Their journey is not just theirs alone. It is a rallying call to all who believe that the future of work is flexible, equitable, and built on trust.

When asked about challenges in establishing credibility as a remote-first, women-led firm in a traditionally male-dominated industry, they are quick to dismiss the idea that gender was ever a hurdle.

“Interestingly, being a women-led firm was never a challenge—we never saw it as one, and neither did our clients. What mattered, and continues to matter, is our ability to understand the brief deeply, respond with insight, and deliver with precision. Yes, we were remote-first before it became the norm, and we were operating in a traditionally male-dominated industry—but our focus was always on value creation, not validation. Over time, the consistency of our delivery and the trust we built with both clients and candidates spoke louder than any assumptions. Credibility wasn’t claimed; it was earned—mandate by mandate,” says Ambika.

It’s a perspective that captures both their quiet strength and professional conviction. By focusing on excellence rather than expectation, they turned difference into distinction—proving that credibility, once earned, needs no explanation.

Championing women, redefining work

At The People Network, supporting women professionals—especially mothers—has been intentional from day one. “As founders who have navigated both leadership and motherhood ourselves, we’ve built a firm that reflects empathy, flexibility, and performance in equal measure,” they share.

The company’s operating model is designed to be outcome-driven rather than hours-based, allowing team members to work around their lives, not against them. “Whether it’s flexible schedules, remote work, or simply the space to re-enter the workforce after a break, we’ve consciously created an environment where women can thrive without compromise,” they explain.

Beyond internal policies, the founders have extended this mindset to the wider ecosystem. “We’ve made it a point to mentor and advocate for women in the talent space—encouraging clients to think beyond traditional career arcs and consider leadership potential in non-linear journeys,” they add. Their success, they say, is proof that when women are supported with trust and structure, “they deliver impact that goes far beyond expectations.”

Looking ahead

The People Network is poised to build on its strong foundation by expanding its diverse team and exploring new frontiers. “We want to continue pushing boundaries—venturing into emerging sectors, experimenting with unconventional mandates, and yet consciously strengthening the industries that have been our core,” they share. Over the next five years, the firm plans to refine internal processes and deepen its research-led insights, while investing in leadership development. “We’re also focused on sponsoring our own leaders to participate in programmes that enhance their skills,” they add, “because when our people grow, our business grows with them.”

Legacy of purpose

Anupama and Ambika’s story is a testament to the power of vision, resilience, and empathy. They have proven that women leaders can transform industries, build thriving organisations, and redefine what success looks like — all while staying true to their values.

“To the women who didn’t wait for permission, who turned chaos into courage, who built a legacy between nap times and negotiations — you are the leaders we have been waiting for,” the founders reflect, encapsulating the ethos that drives The People Network.

Through heart, grit, and unwavering determination, they have not just built a business — they have reshaped the narrative of leadership in hospitality and beyond, inspiring a generation to lead with purpose, empathy, and excellence.
