QCI to monitor hotel, restaurant food

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSI) under the Union Ministry of Health is all set to regulate the standard of food served to customers by five-star hotels, restaurants, dhabas and even roadside food vendors.

According to the regulations, hotel and restaurant owners will have to ensure that the food served by them is hygienic and as per standards set by the food safety authority.

Work on this has already started and it will be first launched in New Delhi before the commencement of Commonwealth Games. Subsequently, it will be implemented in Gujarat.

Girdhar Gyani, Secretary-general of Quality Control of India (QCI), told the media that those restaurants, hotels or dhabas adopting the regulations would be issued certificates approved by QCI after paying a nominal fee.

All such hotels and restaurants will have to undergo a check of their foods by a QCI team every quarter to ensure that they maintain the required standards. In case of a failure, they will be fined and FSSI will have the powers to order closure of such hotels and restaurants.
