Hotels in Ooty are not performing well enough and hotel occupancy is below expectations. To add to this already dismal scenario, Ooty tourism industry is worried that the extended snow season in Himachal Pradesh could affect tourist arrivals in the city.
However local tourism industry is confident to bounce back in May. The local tourism industry is counting on the horse racing events in May like Nilgiris 2000 Guineas and Nilgiris Derby Stakes. Horse racing has been a major tourist attraction in Ooty besides the annual floral carnival, which usually brings in travellers.
Ooty is a summer destination that attracts thousands of tourists in India during the months of April to July to get some relief from the heat. Usually around this time of year, snow season in Himachal Pradesh ends and thousands of tourists prefers to spend family vacations in Ooty.
Tourists in north India are still preferring to travel to destinations in Himachal like Manali and Rohtang Pass to enjoy winter sports before the end of snow season. This has left tourist numbers in Ooty less than those expected for April.
