What does your job entail on a daily basis?
My job is to turn a messy room into the most organised room in terms of cleaning.
What is your favourite part of this job?
Making the Westin’s ten layered signature Heavenly beds is the best part of my job. Another thing I love is when I get a room that is really untidy and it is a big challenge to ensure it is back to a fresh room that I make for the new guest.
Which parts of the job do you not like and how do you motivate yourself to do them?
To be honest, I really enjoy my job; initially I wanted to be a chef, but with my second choice I got into housekeeping. In a short span, I have discovered that although we housekeepers can’t be the face of the hotel, a guest will always leave a honest feedback for us in the room.
What is the funniest thing that ever happened to you at work?
One fine day I walked into the hotel and my executive housekeeper asked me how come I’m in the hotel – and I realised that it was my weekly off that day.
When was the last time you saw a movie in the theatre?
I saw ‘3 Idiots’ recently. After my day’s work I really get tired and don’t feel like doing anything apart from sleeping.
If you could do any job in the world what would it be?
It will always be as a housekeeper and I aspire to be the executive housekeeper, where one can have so many opportunities to execute an individual’s creativity. It involves sourcing out smart outfits for associates, linen, ensuring standards of rooms are met and above all, managing a big team.
Which celebrities have you met at work and what were they like?
So far I have only met Baichung Bhutia and Saurav Ganguly. I never felt they were big celebrities; they were in the hotel all the while in their shorts and slippers and behaving very naturally, unlike most celebrities who are always carrying an attitude.
Which is your favourite hotel in the world?
I have worked as a trainee in many hotels but nothing like this experience of working with The Westin Hyderabad Mindspace. It has made me so confident in my job and also allows me to take individual ownership over my work. In future too I would like to be part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts.
How do you unwind after a long, hard day at work?
After long hours of work the best way to unwind for me will be watching a good Hollywood movie.
What is your motto in life?
My motto in life is to be successful, have loads of money and be the best housekeeper.
“There will be competition, but there’s room for everybody” – a confident Amari
(hmm. It’s battle stations, people!)
“As for CWG, we need to secure the entire city (of Delhi) and not just the hotels” – a matter-of-fact Leela
(we agree, we agree!)
The South Gujarat Hotels and Restaurant Association recommends amending Gujarat’s dry laws and simplifying the process of issuing permits to local residents
(there’s many a slip betwixt the cup and the lip!)
