You were born in Iran; your career has taken you across countries, indeed, continents. How important is such global experience and expertise in the GM of an Indian hotel?
I have been in the hospitality industry for 25 years now, and have had the privilege to travel around the world and acquaint myself with different cultures.
I feel that a global experience only adds values and helps enrich one’s knowledge of the outside world.
As a GM, I was posted in the Middle East for many years before my shift to India. With each move, I have learnt something new. Each international work experience has enriched me professionally and personally. It has helped me understand the people better and adapt to new cultures — to imbibe the best of each culture in terms of their lifestyle, habits, traditions. It has definitely opened up my mind about the world, and helped me become a more global citizen through new experiences and exposure.
My global work experience has helped me and my family make a smooth transition to India. As a person, it has made me more open and accepting of the different cultures and experiences. I am a people’s person and have loved my interaction and stay in India. It’s a vibrant country and is so rooted culturally. Every day here has been a learning for me and there so much that I have learned from its people and their culture.
What are the special challenges of the Indian hospitality market?
India, as a market, is so diverse and unique. There are so many target market segmentations to cater to. As a hospitality leader, it’s crucial for us to understand the needs and preferences of the target market and deliver the brand promise, products and service accordingly. The challenge really is to deliver exceptional offerings, service to the ever-changing and dynamic market. To constantly be updated with the latest trends and innovate your product accordingly. However, the challenging Indian market is what drives us to perform and outdo ourselves every time and keeps us on our toes for newer ways to host our guests.
What is the best thing about your job?
The best thing I like about my job is the fact that I get to meet and interact with so many people. I like the fact that through my job I can make someone’s day more memorable through an exceptional stay with us. I get to learn so much every day from my colleagues. Each one of them inspires me to be a better person.
The worst thing about your job?
I honestly can’t think of anything. I have been in this industry for 25 years, that itself is proof of how much I enjoy and cherish what I do.
If not an hotelier, what would you be?
If not an hotelier, I would like to be a secretary general at the United Nations.
