India sees 30 per cent drop in tourist arrivals, amidst Coronavirus crisis; CII predicts huge losses

The inbound tourist arrivals in India has witnessed a 25 to 30 per cent drop owing to the outspread of deadly novel Coronavirus. There has been a drastic reduction in number of international travellers (visitors to India), about 25 to 30 per cent drop informs Civil Aviation Joint Secretary Usha Padhee.

Owing to quarantine and travel advisory imposed by every country, both inbound and outbound travel have got impacted, she added further.  Notably, the slump has been seen in the number of domestic travellers; however passengers with business purpose or emergency requirements were only travelling.

Besides, as per CII, the Coronavirus outbreak can hit the Indian economy by thousands of crore. According to a PTI report which quoted an impact assessment by the CII Tourism Committee, has suggested that the tourism industry has incurred a loss of approximately USD 28 billion between October to March.

The report further highlighted that the outbreak has not only created chaos owing to cancellation of tickets for travel in the near future but has also created a slump in the booking for travel in the October 2020- March 2021 season. The report has raised alarm on the threat the virus poses to the remainder of the 2020 tourism season. The COVID-19 outbreak has brought to standstill every segment of the tourism industry including inbound, outbound and domestic, across all the segments such as leisure, adventure, heritage, MICE, cruise, corporate and niche segments.
