The wooden roof of the 56-room Punjab Hotel & Restaurant in Lal Chowk Srinagar is ablaze with a real danger of the fire claiming the hotel even as security forces begin clean-up operations. The hotel is owned by Mohd. Sharief.

The hotel was the unfortunate victim of a 22-hour gun battle between two terrorists and Indian security forces which began on December 7.

Siraj Ahmed, president of the Kashmir Hotel & Restaurant Association informed Hotelier India at 17:20 hrs today that the hotel was not full burnt but severely damaged. The latter is a result of the 22-hour gun battle during which grenades were exploded within and around the hotel.

While sustaining heavy overall damage, the hotel structure remains standing. “We are rallying around the hotel owner to help him in his time of need,” said Ahmed

HotelierIndia.com will report on further developements as they happen.
