Old game, new rules

The emails have been pouring in, and the phone would stop ringing only if I took it off the hook. Mind you, I’m not complaining; I love it, and I love that you seem to have truly appreciated the sincere effort that went into the anniversary issue.

Of course, I did have to bully and cajole some of you into getting the inputs on time, and I can see that’s going to be standard procedure, but what the heck, into each life some rain must fall.

And fall it certainly did, in Thailand – unusual, I would have thought, for this time of year. I was there on invitation from the dusitD2 baraquda, Pattaya; I would recommend you check out this chic, nouveau haven for a saner moment in the island city’s otherwise hedonistic atmosphere.

It’s neither here nor there, but Sanjay Leela Bansali ought to feel flattered that his ‘Dola re’ number from Devdas is performed to great enthusiasm by Pattaya’s (in)famous Miss Tiffany troupe.

So, apart from the exotic, our usual offerings, and an interview with ITDC’s Rajiv Makin, the cover story this time profiles the rapidly burgeoning mid-market segment in detail. Is this a growing trend across Asia, we wonder, even as ITB Asia officials state that there is a preponderance of the mid-market players in this year’s upcoming trade fair (see page 42).

Would it be fair to say that much of the frenetic activity in India can be attributed to the imminent Commonwealth Games, or is there more to it?

Serviced apartments are an off-tangent fad that would also seem to have caught the fancy of the market. The demand emanates primarily from the corporate market, with key Indian cities suffering a shortfall of star category rooms when it comes to extended stays.

A lot of international names are entering India within this sector, and we have attempted to pinpoint the potential this segment holds. While the game remains unchanged, with demand being the driver, this, coupled with the mid-market trend, does seem to be a case of the rules being rewritten.

Some of you have commented on how refreshing it was to go through Sanjog Modgil’s column, offering a perspective on another part of the world. Do keep writing in with your suggestions and feedback. We have a new column for you this month – have fun reading it.

Finally, I’m very excited to announce the Hotelier India Awards coming up in December. Nominations close by November 10, so don’t delay, go online and start telling us all about the great work you’ve been doing this and last year!
