Tourists safe in Gulmarg avalanche

Approximately 450 tourists who are in Gulmarg for its ski slopes are safe and unharmed in the avalanche that enveloped the town yesterday according to a senior state tourism offical.

The avalanche, brought about by unprecedented snowfall since Saturday, has claimed 17 lives till now, with 18 injured reported. Most casualties are army personnel. Heavy snowfall is continuing which is hampering the search and rescue effort.

This is the latest in the serious of unfortunate events for Jammu and Kashmir, which recorded its best tourism figures last year in many years.
