According to Sonica Malhotra Kandhari, Joint MD, MBD Group, success in any industry depends on dedication, talent, attitude and determination; not on gender. The hospitality industry is no different.
To be a part of this sector, an individual needs lots of passion, humility, attention to detail and unwavering drive combined with a go-getter approach. Women can have these attributes just as well as men. In fact, Kandhari feels that the former are far more adaptive to challenging situations as compared to their male peers.
Sharing her perspective about the inclusion of more women in the workforce, she said, “The hospitality industry is very safe and conducive in terms of the HR policies followed by companies. However, additional efforts should be made to add more women staffers.”
She did note that initially it can get a little overwhelming for women to get accustomed to the long working hours. However, once they get used to it, they fall in love with this work style and are keen pursue it passionately.
In terms of representation of women in leadership roles, she agreed that the ratio is still skewed towards men. She is, however, hopeful that it will be far better in future.
Kandhari suggested hospitality chains to encourage ladies in managerial roles to take up senior management positions. “Additional emphasis on this can empower women professionals, who are often outshining in their roles,” she concluded.
