Going green may be the trend today but it is important to network and increase demand for green products so that they become cheaper and more accessible says Agustin Otegui Saiz
If you are a person who doesn’t live in a cave, then you are part of the billions of inhabitants in this planet being bombarded everyday through every possible means to become green. This means you have to care about the environment, to commit to a cause, in other words to save the planet.
Even if you are in the best disposition, being green it´s not only difficult but expensive.
Unfortunately, we live in a world where economical interests set the pace.
The global crisis we are living has forced countries like the USA (just one example) to start adopting real measures towards the environment. I would love to think all of them are doing it because they care. Reality is that they are changing their cars for the ones who use less petrol, not because of global warming, but because oil is so expensive these days. Same thing with energy, they are starting to use solar panel to heat the water in their homes to save money at the end of the month.
As any other product, being green is going through the supply and demand process. We need to make governments and companies see an economical but sustainable benefit in being green.
Organic products are one example. When they were first introduced into the market they were really expansive. Producers didn´t know the precise production methods, they lacked the right tools and resources and so forth. This constraints, plus consumers not considering them in their diet made it harder for them.
Things are starting to change nowadays. Certain supermarkets only accept organic products on their shelves and for some restaurants they are the only ingredients in their menu.
Hybrid cars went through the same process. First only tycoon could afford the whole industry behind an electric car.
The more we turn into green products and services, the more accessible and affordable they will become.
If we separate our rubbish in our homes, it has to be the government or the company in charge of collecting it, the one that has to keep it separated through the whole process. Surrounding the recycling business we find as well a huge mafia. Inside this industry we find the magnate of cardboard, the magnate of aluminium, etc. Not only they control the prices, but set the standards of quality.
It is in us to demand a transparent a conscious supervision.
Many multinational companies have started to buy rainforest hectares around the world. They don’t do this is order to save or protect them, but to sell carbon credits to other companies in order to make a profit over a land that doesn’t belong to them.
This means that in the near future all the natural resources will be owned by a bunch of big companies, leaving us with no access to green areas unless we pay.
One of the mayor problems is our social laziness and lack of commitment. If we see somebody doing a good thing for the environment, let’s applaud this attitude and imitate it. Same thing if we see someone not caring for the environment. We should let this people know the reach of their act and how they affect everybody.
As a conclusion I can suggest that we act as Linux software works. We have to share, upgrade and promote any possible tools that we use or create in order to make this planet better.
There are no barriers for information today. Let’s all take advantage of these resources and help each other be greener every day, in every way.
