The race to go green is on

(NULL)

As we celebrate World Environment Day on June 5th, this issue is dedicated to ‘The Earth’. Rightfully we call it the Eco issue because it is about the economics of survival.

As one of the largest consuming industries– the hotel business, being eco- friendly is crucial for continued and sustainable existence.

The need to conserve the most important and limited natural resources, energy and water, is crucial.

Unlimited resources such as wind and solar power are being actively used to generate energy. The number of properties implementing such practises is few. Only a  few Indian hoteliers and owners have woken up to the ramifications of not being eco- wise. Only bringing the entire industry on the same platform of best practises will bring about a noticeable difference.

The time to infuse some momentum in eco-sustainability is now. Embracing eco- best practises will not only enhance our business and bottom line but cater to the increasing number of eco-conscious guests.

Many eco- practises tend to have high installation costs  but you can choose your level of going green and makes changes gradually, depending on available finances. The best part is that most of these practises end up paying for themselves and cut operating costs in the long run.

But going green is not an easy task. The hospitality industry needs support from the government.

Last month’s electoral process saw the re-election of the government and stable, continuous government augers well for an industry that is looking at continuity in policy reforms and implementation of various infrastructure projects.

Let us hope that some mandate on environmental responsibility is also put in place. We must not look for an occasion or a reason to adopt such best practises. The green race is on – we must protect what little we have left.
