We are used to seeing women being represented in various departments of hotels, be it in the kitchen, housekeeping, front office and F&B, but it’s rare to see them in the security department. On the occasion of Women’s Day, this month, Hotelier India highlights the journey of this unsung heroine – Bhanu, who is trained in Krav Maga and won the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award. After a nine-year stint in the Indian army where she trained commandos in combat skills, her attention was drawn into the hospitality sector where she could put her skills to good use. She joined ITC Grand Central after working with ITC Grand Chola for five years.
- What are the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated segment? How did you tackle the same?
“To be very honest, I have always enjoyed my work in the hospitality industry. And have always felt accepted and embraced. I didn’t face any challenges just because I am a woman. In fact, I feel empowered!”
- From the time you joined the industry to now, what are the changes you’ve noticed towards the perception of women in the space?
“In the initial years, not many women understood the technicalities of artificial intelligence. Today, maximum of the operations with artificial intelligence devices, is carried out by ladies. And this change has empowered women to stay advanced and such developments definitely change the perception of women in the industry and in this space.”

- If you had to talk about some key highlights of your career, what would they be?
I was awarded the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini award and am the first Indian lady to have cleared krav maga-Israeli military combat tactic. I was trained in fourth karate post Dan black belt. But out of all achievements, I rejoice the training that I provided to the NSG commandos.”
- What, according to you, are the qualities needed for a successful head of security? And what have been your success mantras so far?
“Hard work is one of the most important qualities that is required to be successful in one’s life. And I believe, relentless efforts put in acquiring knowledge shall always enhance or upgrade one’s growth. Staying fit both physically and mentally is also one of the most important qualities.
“My success mantra is ‘Yath Bhavo tath Bhavti’, and in my own words – whatever be the circumstances I shall keep creating my opportunities.”
