India’s most celebrated chef and the torch bearer of contemporary Pan Asian cuisine in India, Chef Vikramjit Roy announces the opening of his much-awaited restaurant called The Tangra Project, which is also context.eat’s maiden restaurant in South Delhi’s premium shopping and gourmet destination DLF Avenue. The Tangra Project is an homage to the quintessential cuisine culture of Calcutta’s food paradise.

Calcutta’s unique cosmopolitan convergence of conflicting ideas, impulses and tastes that spread across Northern India and continues until today to inspire artists, intellectuals, spiritualists, adda-enthusiasts and yes, cooks and Chefs. The Rasgulla, Kathi roll, Tangra Chinese, Calcutta’s best known food exports may well be symbols of the spirit and the city’s inclusiveness and inventiveness. At The Tangra project we celebrate the spirit, seeking inspiration from it while composing an own ode to joy and the city.

From Mughlai food to Anglo- Indian signatures, from traditional Bengali gems to popular Indian-Chinese inspired by the Hakka community who migrated to India, this unique menu has something for myriad taste buds.

The Tangra Projects stands its ground in a spacious expanse of 3300 sq.ft. The restaurant is a culinary landmark for gourmands to experience breezy brunches between shopping hauls and lunches under the skylight in the afternoons. The space swiftly transitions into a lively, vibrant and high-spirited bar by the evenings with palatable delicacies and innovative cocktails.

The Walk-in bar, Delhi’s first ever inside a shopping mall is a perfect space for afternoon G&Ts. Every cocktail draws parallel from the various transitioning ethnicities that migrated to Calcutta.

Chief Mixologist Akhilesh comes with a rich body of work and has worked with notable fine dining restaurants and eclectic bars across the subcontinent. Some of the signature cocktails that will adorn the menu are the refreshing Doctor’s Advice (Turmeric infused gin, fresh orange, ginger, tonic water) and Cold Pot(Vodka, miso honey, charred pepper, coriander).

Speaking about this exciting new concept, Chef Vikramjit Roy, Co-founder context.eat  said, “The Tangra Project is a structured balance of cuisine and nostalgia. Every element of the restaurant brings to the forefront, my love for Calcutta’s culture and the fact food is ingrained in the anatomy of the city. It’s like the circle of life for me. With this restaurant, we aim to offer a one-of-a-kind experience for the gourmands in Delhi.”

Chef Vikramjit Roy is synonymous with some of the iconic restaurants in the country such as Wasabi by Morimoto at Taj Mahal Palace, Pan Asian at ITC Chola, Chennai and Tian – Asian Cuisine Studio at ITC Maurya. His expertise in Pan Asian and East Indian cuisine is evident in his rich body of work. The food menu touches upon the famous food districts in Calcutta and carefully curated dishes from those places that represent them.

The menu is magnanimous with more than 200 dishes which has been segmented based on the neighborhoods and various influences that has inspired the food in Calcutta like “From Burrah Sahib’s Bawarcheekhana”, “From My Mum’s kitchen”, “New Market’s Kathi Mera Sathi”, “Bao Baazar”, “Kowloon to Kalikatta dumplings” and many more.

Commenting on his new venture, Mr. Vir Kotak, Entrepreneur, passionate artist and Co-founder, context.eat, said, “I’m so excited for people to see the final product of The Tangra Project. Designed by Studio Pomegranate under the able leadership of renowned architect Pranav Naik, the restaurant pushes the envelope in terms of design aesthetics and creative innovations. Chef Vikramjit and Vir’s admiration for Tangra exemplifies in every nook and corner of this restaurant.

The hand-cut and backlit marbles slates are a walk down the memory lane as it represents the quintessential windows on the streets of Calcutta giving a glimpse of the outside world to the dwellers. The exquisite and vibrant fish mural on the walls of the restaurant is the piece de resistance and is a symbol of Calcutta’s essence of cuisine and culture. The ceiling that comes alive and illuminates the charm and vibe of the restaurant is an exceptional work of art and technology that sets up an ideal mood for day and night-time with mood lighting, switching the dining experience from leisurely lunches to high octane and vibrant evenings.

The restaurant has a private entry way, complete with valet services so one does not have to beeline at the shopping mall. Apart from experiential food and beverage choices, The Tangra Project will have live musical performances by popular rock and indie artists, giving the space an elevated glamour and a bustling nightscape.
