Oberoi Group denies entering mid-market segment

The Oberoi Hotels & Resorts president Liam Lambert has strongly denied plans of the group entering the mid-market hotel range.

This follows the announcement last month by The Leela Group to enter the three-star segment.

Several Oberoi properties are ranked among the top hotels in the world in the luxury segment, but the group has still not capitalised on the larger consumer base by entering the mid-market range.

In an exclusive interview with Hotelier India, Lambert said the reason was a strategic issue.

“You can have a flash-in-the-pan, but it’s the consistency in recognition we’re looking for; our target audience is the top of the pyramid,” he said.

“Our business is luxury. We’re not Coca Cola or Holiday Inn – we’re not a commodity. We’re about highly exclusive luxury services,” he added.
