India’s leading and world’s 12th busiest airport, Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) recently announced that its Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) has now turned single-use plastic free. With this sustainable move, the GMR-led DIAL has turned out to be first Indian airport to implement this practice.
The DIAL was recently certified by The Confederation of Indian Industry-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development (CII-ITC CESD), for its voluntary and successful implementation of single-use plastic-free airport measures within IGI Airport’s operations.
While single-use plastic ban has been implemented in the airport, however, some of the plastic items have been exempted from the list. Products such as sealed PET bottles, security tamper-evident bags, compostable plastic bags, and pre-packaged materials from manufacturers that are meant for sale are exempted from this ban.
Talking about this new development, DIAL Chief Executive Officer Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said that their objective is to make the Delhi airport free from single-use plastic. The airport’s move is in line with the Indian PM’s vision to abolish all single-use plastic from India by 2022, he added.
